Health Services provides medical services for students currently enrolled at Northern State University. Health Services is staffed with a certified medical assistant and a registered nurse who can assist you.

Services Provided:
- Assessment and treatment of acute or sudden onset of illness or injury
- Referral services based on the individual's physical and emotional needs
- Immunizations to meet the vaccine needs of the students: MMR and meningitis
- Lab testing (urine screening, strep throat, blood count and mono screening) are free to the student when the tests are determined necessary by the RN on staff and collected at the Health Service office
- Limited over-the-counter medications for common colds, sore throat, cough, and headaches
- Medical equipment such as crutches, cold/hot packs and a wheelchair are available to check out
- Informational and referral service assistance are also provided to students upon a specific request
Immunization Services: NSU Health Services charges for administering immunizations. If interested in a particular immunization, please call the Health Services office for cost information. We do not file insurance claims on vaccines received through our office.
Medical Services: Avera Aberdeen Family Physicians has a contract with Northern to provide medical services. They have 7 physicians available to meet your medical needs.
In case of sudden illness or injury, NSU will cover an evaluation by a health care provider only if the nurse on duty at NSU Health Services sees you first. NSU does not cover X-rays, lab or treatments performed at the physician's office.
If you choose to go to another facility to receive medical care without a referral from the NSU Health Services office, any bills for service would be at your expense. Northern doesn't cover emergency room visits or follow-up appointments related to an emergency room visit.
Services Not Covered:
- Treatment of chronic or pre-existing illness or injury (thyroid, diabetes, depression, fracture etc.)
- Any illness or injury where care has been recently provided by another care provider and symptoms have not been resolved or have recurred
- Any re-check visits in the physician's office
- Yearly physical exams or sports physicals
- Coverage of prescriptions to cover chronic or ongoing medical conditions
- Pregnancy or family planning services

Prescription Services: Northern is under contract with a local pharmacy to supply students' medication needs - both prescription and over-the-counter - at discount rates. This discount does not apply to medications for chronic illnesses or recurrent conditions. The pharmacy under contract is:
