Gayla Martens joined the Center for Statewide E-learning (CSEL) in 2004, after 10 years teaching secondary education in traditional classrooms. Since coming to CSEL, she has taught Spanish I and II to high school students via telecommunication technology.
She currently teaches from a studio at Northern State University using the Digital Dakota Network (DDN) to interact with her first-year language students. She also teaches third-year language students via pre-recorded online class sessions. In addition to learning a second language, her students develop online learning skills via Desire2Learn, their course management system.
Nominated by colleagues, Sra. Martens received the South Dakota World Language Teacher of the Year Award in 2010. With her colleagues, she helped develop the Spanish I and II CSEL Spanish curriculum and South Dakota Virtual High School Spanish 1 and II rubrics.
Her professional career outside of academia includes organizing CultureFest, an event joining the city of Aberdeen, Northern and South Dakota high school language students.
An important part of her life is family: her husband (elementary educator and high school coach in the Aberdeen Public School District), three sons and daughter. She and her family enjoy traveling, playing games and watching sporting events.
