A creative force of mass proportions, the Northern State University Art Department has left its mark, or brushstroke, nearly everywhere you look on campus, in the community and even on a global scale. From the brilliant exhibitions displayed throughout the Northern Galleries to the masses of yarn that can be found around campus when the Art Club “yarnifies” NSU, there is certainly no shortage of creativity flowing into and out of the NSU Art Department.

NSU men’s basketball team makes historic national championship appearance in home state

 

For Northern State University, 2018 will be remembered as the year the men’s basketball team united the state of South Dakota with an electrifying national championship appearance at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

The Wolves made history with a record-breaking season that drew an unprecedented level of hometown support – and “hometown” extended far beyond the borders of the NSU campus.

As a high school dropout, Shane Haley earned his GED at 16 years old. But by age 25, he was still working six days a week at a Cracker Barrel until he was 25, he struggled to make ends meet for rent.

“I knew things weren’t going to change unless I did something different,” explained Haley, a native of Houston, Texas. “One day I was chatting with my mom on the phone when she mentioned that there was a college in Aberdeen, where she was living. So, I took the opportunity and moved in with her.”

ABERDEEN, S.D. – When Jodi Gardner would visit her uncle, Keith Gerving, she’d often find him sitting in his living room with rolls of wire, stripping them to sell the copper.

All of that money would go to scholarship funds for Northern State University students.

Gerving, a longtime NSU employee who passed away in December 2016, went above and beyond in his generosity for Northern, raising money for student scholarships in numerous ways. The university honored him by planting a tree on campus and installing a plaque at the site.
