Greetings from the Department Chair Steven A. Usitalo.
Welcome to the webpage for the Department of History, Sociology, Political Science & Geography at Northern State University. Please take a moment to learn more about each of our Majors and Minors.
Our students delve into the study of people, place and time. We use primary and secondary materials to find patterns, contest widely held assumptions, then propose ideas/theories based on a meticulous engagement with the evidence. Whether it's an historical document, social survey data, or political activity, we will challenge you to think critically and then to articulate your ideas in a lucid manner.
Teaching is at the heart of what we do. We take pride in providing the most rigorous and admired teaching on campus. It is no accident that our department has five recipients of Northern State University’s Outstanding Faculty Award. Our small class sizes further enhance your classroom experience.
Teaching without an accompanying research agenda can, however, become an anachronistic and unproductive enterprise. New evidence emerges and methodologies change; in order to remain relevant professionally, our faculty cannot remain isolated from the changes transforming our wider society. The historians, sociologists, political scientists and geographer active in our department have demonstrated themselves to be successful at receiving research grants, cognizant of the need to regularly attend academic/professional conferences, and - more than any other department at NSU - effective in publishing the results of their research.
We're also your gateway to internships in museums, law enforcement, government offices and many more.
