Workshops Explore Senior Programs in our Region
Released June 3, 2008
(ABERDEEN, SD) Leaders of senior centers in North and South Dakota will gather at Northern State University’s Johnson Fine Arts Center on Jun 10-11 to explore the future of senior programs.
Many communities are focused on how to engage the baby-boomers, who are retiring, in community programs for seniors. Christine Beatty, Director of a senior center in Madison, Wis. and former Chairperson of the National Institute for Senior Centers, will highlight the issues in a keynote presentation at a banquet on Tuesday evening. In addition, Kathy Sporre, director of the senior center at Fergus Falls, Minn., will report on a study concerning senior centers of the future.
A host of ideas shared at the recent American Society on Aging/National Council on Aging conference in Washington, D.C. and many programs for senior centers will be highlighted in 16 workshops presented in the two day event. Sessions will range from using computers and exercise programs, like “Wii,” to programs in the humanities, nutrition services, financing, strategic planning and “Senior Centers without Walls.”
All persons interested in senior centers and their programs for seniors are invited to attend the conference. The cost is $85 but scholarships are available. Sessions begin at 1 p.m. on Tue, Jun. 10 and conclude at 3 p.m. on Wed, Jun. 11.
The conference is co-sponsored by the Regional Aging Council of Northeast South Dakota, Northern State University, and Presentation College. Questions about the conference can be directed to Aaron Schultz, Presentation College, 605-225-1634, Laura London, NSU, 605-626-3402 or to Jim Seeber, NSU, 605-626-3433.
