ABERDEEN, S.D. – Online registration for the 97th annual Northern State University Gypsy Days Parade will begin Monday, May 21.
Individuals and groups interested in entering the parade can access the online form starting Monday by going to www.northern.edu and clicking on the “About,” “Student Activities,” “Gypsy Days” and “Parade” links.
The parade will be Oct. 6 with a start time of 9 a.m. This year’s parade theme is "Gypsies on Safari," which will provide participants a wide array of options for float decoration. A panel of six judges comprised of Northern State and local community leaders will present awards in the following categories:
• Best Overall Float
• President’s Award – best Northern State University entry
• Mayor’s Award – best Aberdeen Area community entry
• Chamber Award – best Aberdeen area business entry
• Northern Pride Award – best representation of theme
• Northern Spirit Award – best group participation and spirit
• Thunder’s Award – best unit featuring live animals
• Gypsy Award – best unit featuring vehicle(s)
The judges for the 2012 parade are Roger Feickert, Todd Forkel, Yvonne Freese, Andrea Hathcote, Jennifer Slaight-Hansen and Julie Stevenson.
Parade lineup is based on the order in which online registrations are received. The deadline to enter online is 5 p.m. Sept. 21. Only those individuals or groups who meet the online deadline will receive a block and space assignment. Confirmation letters will be mailed with lineup information about one week prior to the parade.
Individuals or groups who register after Sept. 21 will be directed to assemble in the Presentation College parking lot north of 15th Avenue. Late registrations must be made in person at the Office of Student Activities in the NSU Student Center.
