ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University and Aberdeen Area Music Teachers Association are sponsoring a workshop on teaching composition and improvisation for piano teachers and classroom music teachers.
The workshop, scheduled for April 20 in the Johnson Fine Arts Center choir room, is called “Make Your Own Music!”
The event will feature sessions by NSU faculty members Dr. Marcela Faflak, Fred Hemke, Dr. Wendy van Gent and Dr. Robert Vodnoy. Guests will be pianist Ron Parker and cellist Wesley Baldwin. D. Eileen Geske, a music instructor with more than 45 years of teaching experience in private studio and public schools, will be the main presenter. Geske was honored nationally when she was named Music Teachers National Association’s National Music Teacher of the Year in 2004.
The workshop schedule is as follows:
9 a.m.: Registration and coffee
9:30 a.m.: Jazz Singing and Accompanying - A Match Made in Heaven: Dr. Wendy van Gent/Ron Parker.
10 a.m.: Improvisation Step by Step – Piano Basics: Dr. Marcela Faflak
10:30 a.m.: Placement of Instruments within a Musical Arrangement: Fred Hemke
11 a.m.: Composed and Revised – “Sonata for Unaccompanied Cello”: Dr. Robert Vodnoy/ Dr. Wesley Baldwin
11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.: Lunch at the NSU Student Center
1-3 p.m.: Get Creative! Get Results! Ideas and Strategies Galore for Your Composition Score!: D. Eileen Geske
Attendees may earn contact hours for continuing education and renewal of their South Dakota teaching license.
