ABERDEEN, S.D. – In response to Gov. Kristi Noem’s Executive Order 2020-04, the South Dakota Board of Regents has determined all South Dakota public universities will transition spring classes online for the duration of the semester and postpone spring commencement ceremonies until further notice, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

“Throughout this entire situation our focus has been on the health and well-being of our students, faculty and staff,” said NSU President Tim Downs. “Due to the continued spread of COVID-19, it is evident that this is the right decision for Northern and the Board of Regents.”

Students with spring housing contracts will receive pro-rated refunds for housing, meal plans and parking. Refunds are expected to be issued in April. Students should discuss any questions or concerns about their courses or registration with their academic advisors.

NSU Residence Life will coordinate the move-out process, in accordance with CDC guidelines for social distancing. Residence Life will share further details with students in the upcoming week. Some circumstances may allow a small number of students to remain in residence halls until further notice.

All on-campus events will be canceled or postponed through May 15, 2020, and campus remains closed to the general public until further notice.

“I cannot thank our students, faculty and staff enough for their patience and willingness to adapt to this unprecedented situation. As we get through this, we look forward to continuing our educational mission and providing an excellent student experience to everyone at Northern,” said Downs.

Students, faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to help flatten the curve by following CDC guidelines regarding COVID-19. For more information, please visit covid.sd.gov or northern.edu/coronavirus.
