ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Rolf Olson, will present their Winter Tour Concert, entitled “Dancing,” on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Main Theater.

The concert covers a unique variety of dancing pieces from “Pagan Dances” by James Barnes to “Mambo from West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein and beyond.

The concert will feature several distinguished guest performers, including NSU music faculty members Dr. Audrey Miller and Dr. Terry Beckler. Miller will join Dr. Robert Spring of Arizona State University in a clarinet rendition of a piece entitled “Freebirds,” based off of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird.” The piece will be conducted by Dr. Alan LaFave, provost and former Dean of Fine Arts/clarinet professor of NSU. Both LaFave and Miller are former students of Spring. Beckler, chair of the music department and director of the Marching Wolves and Percussion Ensemble at NSU, will also guest conduct at the concert.

This concert marks the penultimate event of the Symphonic Band’s Winter Tour, which will culminate in a performance at the South Dakota Bandmasters Association Convention on Friday, Feb. 10, at 3:15 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center of South Dakota State University.

The band will also tour nine area schools, prior to the performance, visiting Groton, Webster and Milbank on Tuesday, Feb. 7, Watertown High School, Great Plains Lutheran High School and Onida High School on Wednesday, Feb. 8, and Aberdeen Central, Roncalli and Aberdeen Christian on Thursday, Feb. 9.

Tickets for the event are $15 for adults, $7.50 for NSU faculty/staff and free for NSU students with an ID. Tickets for the event can be purchased online via the School of Fine Arts website or at the JFAC Box Office. The box office is open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m.
