ABERDEEN, S.D. (July 20, 2017) – A husband and wife team with professional theater design experience across the country is joining the Northern State University School of Fine Arts.

Trevor Carrier has been hired as NSU’s new theater manager/production manager. Jordan Jaked Carrier has been hired as the new NSU costume shop manager and will also teach courses in history of theater and costume design.

The couple currently resides in Georgia. They were hired following a nationwide search and will begin at NSU on Aug. 14.

“Trevor and Jordan will add immensely powerful dimensions to our program and community, as well as improve our capacity to provide students, faculty and patrons an exceptional experience,” said NSU School of Fine Arts Dean Dr. Kenneth Boulton.

Trevor Carrier received his BFA in Theatre Design and Production from Columbus State University and his MFA in Theatre Design and Technology from the University of Georgia. He has been a freelance scenic and properties designer in Atlanta for the past two years and has worked around the country with the Alpine Theatre Project, Horizon Theatre, Aurora Theatre, Burning Coal Theatre, Gateway Playhouse, and Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Carrier is a two-time USITT SE Juried Design Exhibition winner. A member of USITT, he looks forward to joining the organization’s Northern Boundary Regional Section.

After living in the Atlanta area for several years, he said, he’s looking forward to immersing himself in a closer-knit community.

“Aberdeen seems so supportive of the arts organizations in the community, and I am excited to collaborate with the students, faculty, and community,” he said. “I enjoy the scholarly aspects of educational theater and helping students have positive, formative experiences in the arts. An arts education is applicable across many industries, so the skills students will learn working in the theater can be applied to any career path they choose after graduation.”

Jordan Jaked Carrier earned her BA in Theatre from Meredith College in Raleigh and her MFA in Theatre Design and Technology from the University of Georgia in Athens. She comes to Northern from the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, where she was the design assistant in costumes, working with regional and Broadway designers.

Her work experience also includes serving as an assistant costume designer at Williamstown Theatre Festival, where she assisted Tony award-winning designer Paloma Young. Jaked Carrier has designed for the Alliance Theatre, Aurora Theatre, Horizon Theatre, Burning Coal Theatre, Theater of the American South, Deep Dish Theatre and Williamstown Theatre Festival.

In 2016, she was nominated for a Suzi Bass Award for Outstanding Costume Design of a Play for "The City of Conversation" at the Horizon Theatre in Atlanta. She is also a United States Institute for Theatre Technology SE Juried Design Exhibition winner.

Jaked Carrier said she’s excited to escape the pace of the city and bring what she’s learned in the industry to NSU.

“I have always wanted to teach. I am most excited to bring my passion for theater and collaboration to the students and faculty at Northern,” she said. “The skills learned in the theater can be practically applied beyond the artistic community, and I am looking forward to fostering a safe environment for artistic exploration at NSU and with the community in Aberdeen.”
