Northern State University Theatre has proven to be the regional mecca for the arts, boasting the talent to put on big-name musical productions such as “The Phantom of the Opera” and drawing sell-out crowds from long distances.

Performance Opportunities
If you have a passion for theatre, you can be part of that success – on stage or behind the scenes. The NSU theatre department produces two main stage musicals each season plus a touring musical review, so potential students have many performance opportunities.

Theater Experience and Careers
Degrees in theatre and musical theater prepare you for careers in education or in the theatre industry, as well as for graduate study. At Northern, you can take part in campus productions and gain experience in acting, directing, stage management, lighting, makeup and stagecraft.

Production Facilities
Major productions are staged annually in Northern’s 1,000 seat Johnson Fine Arts Center (JFAC). Productions include a fall musical, a winter play and a spring musical. Planned renovations to JFAC include a black-box theater, an open and flexible space for more intimate performances.

NSU Theatre has returned to Krikac Auditorium for mainstage productions. Built in 1907, and recently renovated with new seating and improved acoustics, its fine historic architectural setting offers viewing and performing pleasure for actors and audiences alike.

Northern Fort Playhouse
Northern students fill most acting roles at Northern Fort Playhouse near Sisseton, S.D., and their participation is eligible for college credit. The Playhouse is a collaboration between Fort Sisseton State Park and NSU.  This regional attraction will celebrate its ninth season in summer 2014.

 Master Class with 'Jean Valjean'
Ivan Rutherford

Broadway veteran Ivan Rutherford (Jean Valjean on Broadway and on tour in Les Misérables) came to Northern to work with musical theater and theater students.  His master class focused on actors who sing, and how to act a song.  Rutherford also shared valuable insights about a career in professional theatre.  The two-hour session invigorated and excited the students, who have just begun rehearsing for NSU’s April production of Les Misérables.
