The TRiO Upward Bound Program helps students graduate from high school and successfully complete postsecondary education.
Upward Bound is a federal grant program funded through the U.S. Department of Education. It's 1 of 8 TRiO programs, meant to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of postsecondary education.
What We Do
Upward Bound helps students succeed in high school and prepares them for postsecondary education. The program offers services throughout the academic year and during a 6-week residential summer program at Northern.
Upward Bound services include:
- Academic advising
- Assistance completing the FAFSA
- Information on financial and economic literacy
- Scholarship preparation and completion
- Cultural experiences, and
- Entry into postsecondary education
During the summer program, students attend classes in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages.
How to Utilize Our Services
Northern State University Upward Bound offers services to 9 high schools:
- Aberdeen Central
- Frederick Area
- Langford Area
- Standing Rock
- Webster Area, and
To be eligible to apply for the program, a student must be a 9th, 10th, or 11th grader at one of these schools and come from a low-income and/or first-generation-to-college family. Please contact University College (at left) for more information.
