Ms. Nelson was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and graduated from Augustana University in 2010 with majors in government/international affairs, modern foreign languages (Spanish and Mandarin Chinese), and international studies. During her time at Augustana, she participated in study abroad trips to Nicaragua, Israel/Palestine, Jordan and spent one semester at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, taking classes in Chinese culture, history, politics and diplomacy. These experiences contributed to her life-long passion for foreign cultures and languages. From 2008-2010, she completed three years of intensive Mandarin language study at Beloit College’s Center for Language Studies.
After graduating from university, Ms. Nelson lived in China from 2011 to early 2020 working in teaching, non-profit, consulting and corporate positions before coming to Northern State University. Ms. Nelson is continually inspired to travel, learn and meet people from all over the world. Thus far, she has traveled to at least eighteen countries and territories, eighteen Chinese provinces, and twenty-five US states. Outside of work and travel, you can find Ms. Nelson cooking, baking, spending time at the lake, reading, swimming, drawing, going for bike rides, and spending time with family and friends.
