COVID-19 News
Northern and Avera are hosting a FREE Vaccination Booster Clinic this Friday, Jan. 21, which is open to the public.
Faculty and staff may pick up their two free over the counter COVID-19 tests from their supervisor or department. Students may pick up COVID-19 tests in 222 Avera Student Center.
A limited number of N95 masks are available to faculty and staff; please speak with your supervisor or Judy Lapka in Academic Affairs.
Booster COVID-19 shots will be available:
- When: Friday, Jan. 21, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
- Where: Avera Student Center Mezzanine
- What: Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer
- How: Walk in or call 605-622-5273 to schedule an appointment.
- Cost: COVID-19 vaccinations are free.
Please bring your vaccination card.
The event is open to all Northern faculty, staff, students and the public (12 and older, booster only). Those under 18 must have a legal guardian present. Per Avera Health, face coverings must be worn within the mezzanine during the vaccination clinic.
Moderna:
For individuals who received a Moderna COVID-19 vaccine: Booster shots are recommended for those who are 18 and older who were vaccinated 5 months or more after completing your primary COVID-19 vaccination series.
Pfizer-BioNTech:
For individuals who received a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine: Booster shots are recommended for those who are 12 and older who were vaccinated 5 months or more after completing your primary COVID-19 vaccination series.
Johnson & Johnson:
For Individuals who received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine: Booster shots are recommended for those who are 18 and older and who were vaccinated two or more months ago.
Please continue efforts to help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses like the flu and coronavirus:
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Try not to touch your face.
- Cover your cough or sneeze.
- Wash your hands often.

CETL Event
On Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 1:30 p.m. in MJ 246, CETL is co-hosting an event with the counseling program to discuss a new initiative for improving the life skills, mental health and academic standing of our first-year students. COVID strained everyone, and our first-year students were particularly impacted. As such, many in this cohort have faced academic difficulties. To support these students, the counseling department is offering a six-week program designed to help students regain good academic standing through group counseling sessions on topics such as self-care, study skill training and first-generation support. To learn more about this amazing opportunity, please attend our Jan. 18 event in MJ 246 or via Zoom. If you cannot attend, feel free to contact Dr. Shalini Mathew with any questions.
Winter Rush and Student Organizations Hub Grand Opening
On Wednesday, Jan. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Avera Student Center, join us for the grand opening of the Student Organizations Hub! This is a place for all recognized student organizations to create, connect and collaborate. Student organizations will also be participating in Winter Rush, meeting with students to share more about their groups. This is a great opportunity to get connected on campus and network with other students.
Parking Permits
Campus community: Parking permits for the spring semester are available to purchase. A permit is required to park in any parking lot on campus. Permits will be valid as explained below. Ticketing will begin Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 8 a.m. If a permit was purchased in the fall, it is good for the whole school year.
Northern’s two types of parking permits are as follows:
- Gray Permit: This permit costs $67.50 for the spring semester and allows you to park in any lot except the visitor lot at the northwest corner of the Johnson Fine Arts Center and the visitor spots in the Washington Street lot. You can purchase this permit online here and pick it up at the Parking Office on the second floor of the Physical Plant the day after submitting your payment online.
- Orange Permit: This permit costs $40.50 for the spring semester and allows you to park in any parking lot except the Washington Street lots, Steele Hall/Great Plains West lot and the visitor lot by the Johnson Fine Arts Center. You can purchase this permit online here and pick it up at the Parking Office on the second floor of the Physical Plant the day after submitting your payment online.
You are encouraged to purchase your permit online. Permits may also be purchased in person at the Physical Plant, though cash or check is required. When purchasing your permit either online or in person, your license plate number is required.

Get paired with a student fitness consultant to shape a plan tailored to your needs. Track your progress with FREE body composition testing each month. Achieve your new year’s goals while helping NSU undergraduate researchers!

Rep. Dusty Johnson at NSU
United States Representative Dusty Johnson will speak on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Centennial Rooms of the NSU Student Center. He will discuss the importance of civic engagement and current affairs in Washington, D.C. The event is sponsored by the Center for Public History and Civic Engagement. Light refreshments will be served.
Intro to 3D Printing
Williams Library is hosting its Introduction to the 3D printer program on Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. Join us in the library to check out how 3D printing works and what steps you need to print on your own. Everyone is welcome!
Honors January Jumpstart
The Honors Program is sponsoring January Jumpstart on Tuesday, Jan. 25, from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Art Gallery. All students are welcome to come hear about different majors, study topics, motivation and budget ideas. The event will feature roundtable discussions where students can be interactive and ask questions.
Cracker Barrels
Legislative Cracker Barrel sessions for 2022 will be held in the Kessler’s Champions Club in the NSU Barnett Center. Cracker barrels, which are open to the public, will take place 10 a.m.-noon on the following Saturday mornings:

Welcome to the Silent Book Club!
This isn’t your regular book club. No set books to read (that's the "silent" part), no pressure to share or discuss. Never worry if you haven't finished the book. No judgment.
The Silent Book Club model means we are not all reading the same book at the same pace. There is no homework and no pressure to lead or contribute to a discussion. We introduce our books and ourselves at the start of the meeting and then we dive into reading for an hour.
Simply bring yourself and whatever you're currently reading (we don't care about genres or formats, anything goes!) All readers are welcome—even e-readers.
While some silent reading parties have a strict ‘No Talking!’ rule, no one will be shushed or shamed at Silent Book Club. The Silent Book Club is about community. Everyone is welcome, and anyone can join.
Please consider joining if you are unable to find time and space to just enjoy a book. That's it! No pressure whatsoever.
The Silent Book Club meets the first Tuesday of every month from 4 to 5 p.m. Next meeting in the Library Round Room Feb. 1, 2022, at 4 p.m.

JFAC Gallery Exhibition
Artist Aaron C. Packard will have an exhibition, “Hyper-Photomontage,” on display in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery through Feb. 4, 2022. A closing reception, free and open to the public, will be held 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4. Packard is an experienced commercial and editorial photographer, working in southeast South Dakota since 2002. “Hyper-Photomontage” features vibrant and abstract, almost kaleidoscope-like photographs that encourage the viewer to linger in observation. Attention Spring Graduates
American Indian Circle Program
NSU is dedicated to the recognition of tribal traditions and ceremonies that complement the holistic well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native students. The American Indian Circle Program would like to invite the NSU campus community to participate in our monthly Smudge the first Tuesday of every month from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. This is a time where we come together and have cultural education time to talk about what smudging is, the importance it symbolizes in Indigenous culture and a time of reflection. For the spring 2022 semester, we will smudge in the courtyard outside MJ 112, which is the new Circle Program student space under the Student Success Center. Everyone is welcome!
Friendship Family Program
The NSU Office of International Programs is looking for Aberdeen families to be part of the Friendship Family Program, which offers international students the chance to spend time with local families. This can help improve their stay in the U.S. by providing opportunities to have American experiences with a family, practice speaking English and form international friendships. Some NSU international students come on an exchange and some come as degree-seeking students for four or more years, so time commitment varies. Families are asked to get together with the students at least twice per semester; they are welcome to meet more often as well. Students are expected to cover their own expenses when with their family; for example, paying for their own dinner or movie ticket. Families are never expected to house the students. To participate in the program, families may apply here, or visit NSU FFP for more information.

HOW TO EARN POINTS
All regular season home competitions are worth 10 points. Some games are worth 20 points and are promoted as “Double Howling Wolves Points” games. If you attend two or more separate athletic events in the same day (i.e. football and volleyball) then you will receive an additional 5 points for that day. Double-header events (i.e. basketball, baseball, and softball) are worth 10 points throughout the entirety of the doubleheader.
All points reset each month allowing for a new opportunity each month to win the monthly prize.
All home athletic events are FREE for NSU Students who have a valid student ticket so there is no required cost to be a part of the Howling Wolves.
All Howling Wolves members are highly encouraged to sit in the designated Student Section at all home athletic events. Become an active member of the Howling Wolves Student Fan Club and help us defend our territory! GO WOLVES!!
