COVID-19 News

The Northern campus is a mask-optional environment. Social distancing restrictions have been lifted, and the COVID-19 case numbers dashboard no longer appears on the NSU website. For more information, visit the NSU COVID-19 Webpage.

NSU Women’s Scholarship

The deadline to apply for the 2021-22 NSU Women’s Scholarship is June 15, 2021. Applicants must either be a full-time NSU employee enrolled in a minimum of three credits or a member of the immediate family (spouse and children) of an NSU employee enrolled in a minimum of nine credits, admitted to a degree-seeking program with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, completed at least 30 credits at time of application, and exhibit financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office. Multiple scholarships awarded; scholarship award(s) vary.

Northern Fort Playhouse Presents 15th Season

The 15th season of Northern Fort Playhouse will be presented in the south barracks building of Fort Sisseton Historic State Park, with performances beginning July 9. “The Oregon Trail,” featuring the iconic game as it sends a middle-schooler into her rocky future as well as to her pioneering family’s past, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. July 9, 17 and 24, and 2 p.m. July 11. “Don’t Hug Me,” a musical comedy set in Minnesota, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. July 10, 16 and 23, and 2 p.m. July 18. Friday evening receptions will be held prior to performances. This will be a time for hors d’oeuvres and drinks for a freewill donation. A Saturday dinner option will also be available on July 10, 17 and 24, and Sunday lunch will be available on July 11 and 18. All seats are reserved, and tickets can be purchased by calling 605-467-3247 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. For more information, please visit Northern Fort Playhouse online.

New Testing Center Hours

The new Testing Center hours are:

  • Month of June: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m.-noon
  • Month of July: The Testing Center will be closed, reopening Aug. 2, 2021

Registrar/Financial Aid Move

The NSU Financial Aid and Registrar’s offices have moved from Dacotah Hall 103 to the Jewett Science Center 209A through the end of September. Financial Aid can be reached at 605-626-2640 or finaid@northern.edu, and the Registrar’s Office can be reached at 605-626-2012 or records@northern.edu.

Parade registration now open

Gypsy Day 2021 is Saturday, Oct. 2, with the 105th annual parade that morning in downtown Aberdeen. Parade registration is now open, as of 8 a.m. June 1, at this link. Entrants will decorate their float based on the theme, and a panel of judges comprised of Northern and community leaders will present awards in various categories. Homecoming week takes place Sept. 27-Oct. 2, with the theme of “Wolves of the Galaxy.” The week’s festivities will also include coronation of a queen and marshal. This year, the annual Gypsy Day football game will be played in the brand new Dacotah Bank Stadium, part of the Regional Sports Complex opening this fall on the NSU campus. 2021 Common Read

Northern State University’s fall 2021 Common Read book will be Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century,” by Alice Wong. Wong will deliver the 2021 NSU Larry and Julie Poeppel Family Common Read Lecture at 7 p.m. Oct. 13. Attendees are invited to gather in the Johnson Fine Arts Center’s Jewett Theater to listen to Wong, who will present live via Zoom. The event is free and open to the public. Wong is a disabled activist and founder and director of the Disability Visibility Project. Akademos will be providing copies of the book for students as they order their fall textbooks. For anyone else, the book is available for purchase on the NSU Wolf Shoppe for $12.95 (plus tax). Read more here!
