Reminder: Campus Forum on Budget and Finance

Faculty and staff are invited to a campus forum on Monday, Nov. 22, in Room 117 of the Johnson Fine Arts Center. NSU Vice President for Finance and Administration Veronica Paulson will provide the campus community with an update on budget and finance issues. Two sessions will be offered: noon-1:30 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m. The same topics will be covered at each session; two options are being offered in order to give more people an opportunity to attend.

 

COVID-19 News

Booster shots are now open to all adults ages 18 years and older at today’s clinic. (See below for more details).

Our last FREE on-campus vaccination clinic for the semester will be TODAY (Nov. 22). Please take advantage of this clinic as Avera does not anticipate offering clinics outside of their Aberdeen facility next semester.

First dose and booster COVID-19 shots will be available:

  • When: TODAY (Monday, Nov. 22), 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Where: Avera Student Center Centennial Rooms
  • What: Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer
  • How: Walk in or call 605-622-5273 to schedule an appointment.
  • Cost: COVID-19 vaccinations are free.

Please bring your vaccination card for booster shots.

The event is open to all Northern faculty, staff, students and the public (12 and older, first dose only). Under 18 must have a legal guardian present. Per Avera Health, face coverings must be worn within the Centennial Rooms during the vaccination clinic.

Pfizer and Moderna:
For individuals who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, booster shorts are recommended for those who are 18 and older who were vaccinated 6 months or more after their initial series.

Johnson & Johnson:
For Individuals who received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, booster shots are recommended for those who are 18 and older and who were vaccinated two or more months ago.

Each student who elects to get vaccinated will receive $25 in Thunderbucks. (Student ID required). 

Please continue efforts to help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses like the flu and coronavirus:

  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Try not to touch your face.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands often.
  • Consider wearing a mask when around others.

Food Drive

The Honors Program and the Pre-Health Club are teaming up to host a Food Drive just in time for the holiday season! Lend a helping hand and donate nonperishable food items to our local Salvation Army. You can drop off your food items outside Dr. Bockorny’s office in Lincoln 118. We will be collecting food items now through Nov. 23.

 

Faculty Training for Online Teaching

Danette Long, Northern’s Instructional Designer, will run the Faculty Training for Online Teaching course multiple times in October and November in an effort to provide faculty in need of this training time to complete all three sessions.  Please note, per NSU Policy 2.1.8 Faculty Training for Online Teaching, “Any current faculty who have not completed Northern’s Faculty Training for Online Teaching course have until Dec. 15, 2021 to complete the training course.” Danette is trying to make the course available at a variety of days and times this semester to accommodate varied schedules. Course completion includes live attendance for each of the three one-hour sessions. Sessions are not recorded. You may attend any of the session dates/times as long as you attend an instance of all three sessions. See the table below for available times:

Artist Display in JFAC Gallery

The work of artist Dwayne Wilcox will be on display in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery through Nov. 30. Wilcox currently resides in Rapid City and is a member of the Oglala Sioux tribe. He is best known and celebrated for his Ledger Art, a term for predominately Plains Indian narrative drawing or painting on paper or cloth.

 

Duvall Senior Art Exhibition

Dylan Duvall will have his Senior Art Exhibition on display Nov. 29-Dec. 13 in the NSU Avera Student Center Art Gallery. Duvall will hold public receptions on Dec. 2 and 3 in the Student Center Art Gallery, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. both days. His exhibition will consist of a range of artwork, including video, posters and photography. 

 

Noon Forums

Noon Forums, which are free and open to the public, will continue throughout the semester at noon most Wednesdays in the library. The final remaining topic is as follows:

  • Dec. 1: The Last Lecture I’d Ever Give (Jeff Bartel)

 

Research Poster Sessions

You are invited to two poster sessions on Thursday, Dec. 2, that will showcase the research projects that our freshman science majors have been working on in General Biology lab. This semester, students have been contributing to an international, crowd-sourced research project for Small World Initiative

  • The first lab section will be displaying their posters 9-10 a.m. in the Jewett Science Center lobby.
  • The second lab section will be displaying their posters 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Jewett Science Center lobby.

Come mingle with the students and ask them about their projects. They would appreciate your support for undergraduate research on campus. 

 

Brandner Senior Art Exhibition

Madeline Brandner will have her Senior Art Exhibition on display Dec. 1-14 in the NSU Lincoln Gallery. Brandner will hold a public reception at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 in the Lincoln Gallery. Digital photography and paintings will be displayed in this exhibition, titled “Ephemera.”

 

Schleich Senior Art Exhibition

Angela Schleich will have her Senior Art Exhibition on display Dec. 1-14 on the NSU campus. Schleich will hold a public reception at 7 p.m. Dec. 4. Her exhibition will include her digital photography, digital paintings and oil paintings.

 

Andrews Senior Art Exhibition

Sasha Andrews will have her Senior Art Exhibition on display through Dec. 3 in the NSU President’s Gallery, located on the second floor of Spafford Hall.

 

Attention Fall Graduates

Graduation is Dec. 11, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the Johnson Fine Arts Center. Fall graduates may order apparel using this link. Please note: Orders received after Nov. 21 are not guaranteed to arrive by graduation.

 

Salvation Army Angel Tree

The Millicent Atkins School of Education invites the NSU campus to support children in our community this holiday season through the Salvation Army Angel Tree. A tree full of tags with children's wish lists are located directly across from the main office in the School of Education. Tags and gifts are due back Dec. 13, 2021.

 

Northern Lights Submissions

Northern Lights is now taking submissions for the 2022 issue of Northern Lights. Students can submit their stories, poetry, art, creative nonfiction, photography, original essays and songs to northernlights@northern.edu or message us on Facebook! Accepted submissions will be included in our literary magazine that is released in March 2022. Please submit all written works as a Word document (.docx) or a PDF (.pdf), and any artworks as a JPEG (.jpeg) or JPG (.jpg) file. Submissions are open until Dec. 31, 2021.
