COVID-19 News

A vaccination clinic for flu shots and the COVID-19 vaccine and booster will take place today, Monday, Nov. 1, on campus:

When: Monday, Nov. 1, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Where: Avera Student Center Centennial Rooms
COVID-19: Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, and Pfizer
Flu: Flulaval Quadrivalent
How: Walk-in or call 605-622-5273 to schedule an appointment
Cost: COVID-19 vaccinations are free
Flu shots: Avera Health will bill insurance (with insurance ID) or accept cash/check for $45.
The first 20 students will receive a free flu shot! (Student ID required.)
Each student who elects to get vaccinated or receives a booster for COVID-19 will receive $25 in Thunderbucks! (COVID-19 Only, Student ID required).
This event is open to all NSU faculty, staff, students, family members and the public.
Per Avera Health, face coverings must be worn within the Centennial Rooms during the vaccination clinic.

Who qualifies for a free COVID-19 booster?

Pfizer and Moderna: For individuals who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, the following groups are eligible for a booster shot at six months or more after their initial series:

65 years and older
Age 18+ who live in long-term care settings
Age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions (learn more details here.)
Age 18+ who work or live in high-risk settings. This includes Northern employees, residence hall students, other education staff like teachers, support staff, and daycare workers (learn more details here.)

Johnson & Johnson: For individuals who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, booster shots are recommended for those 18 and older who were vaccinated two or more months ago.

Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of Governor Frank Farrar

Former South Dakota Governor Frank L. Farrar passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on Oct. 31, 2021, in Rochester, Minn., surrounded by family. Governor Kristi Noem has ordered that flags be flown at half-staff statewide effective immediately in his honor. Flags will remain at half-staff until the day of Governor Farrar’s interment, and those arrangements will be announced at a later time.

Phi Beta Lambda Meeting

Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) has their next meeting on Monday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Hall 224. Haley Grandpre, Dacotah Bank Talent Management Administrator, will join us as a guest speaker. Students from all majors are welcome to attend!

Welcome to the Silent Book Club!

The next meeting will be in the library Round Room on Nov. 2, 2021, at 4 p.m.

This isn’t your regular book club. No set books to read (that's the "silent" part), no pressure to share or discuss. Never worry if you haven't finished the book. No judgment.

The Silent Book Club model means we are not all reading the same book at the same pace. There is no homework and no pressure to lead or contribute to a discussion. We introduce our books and ourselves at the start of the meeting and then we dive into reading for an hour.

Simply bring yourself and whatever you're currently reading (we don't care about genres or formats, anything goes!) All readers are welcome—even e-readers.

While some silent reading parties have a strict “No Talking!” rule, no one will be shushed or shamed at Silent Book Club. The Silent Book Club is about community. Everyone is welcome, and anyone can join.

Please consider joining if you are unable to find time and space to just enjoy a book. That's it! No pressure whatsoever.

The Silent Book Club meets the first Tuesday of every month from 4 to 5 p.m.

Mobile Market and Pantry

The Salvation Army of Aberdeen will host a Mobile Market and Pantry on Tuesday, Nov. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. on the sidewalk between the Avera Student Center and Beulah Williams Library. With only a student ID, students will be able to receive pantry items, produce and pastries. The Salvation Army knows that many students struggle to afford all the expenses of college and life. Come check out the Mobile Market and Pantry for some assistance. The main Salvation Army Food Pantry at 1003 Sixth Ave. S.W. is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. and Tuesday and Thursday by appointment. Fall Festival

On Nov. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m., join CAB and a load of other organizations to show support and get into the fall season with crafts and snacks!

Noon Forums

Noon Forums, which are free and open to the public, will continue throughout the semester at noon most Wednesdays in the library. Remaining topics are as follows:

Jazz Concert

On Thursday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m., the NSU Department of Music will present a jazz concert. Performing will be the NSU 1 O’ Clock Jazz Ensemble directed by Instructor of Percussion James McKinney, and the NSU 2’ O Clock Jazz Ensemble directed by Dr. Grant Manhart. The date of the concert is near the end of the annual fall bird migration, and “Fly into Jazz” is the theme for this concert. The 2 O’ Clock Jazz Ensemble will perform many jazz tunes that reference birds in the title. The concert is free and open to the public, and will take place in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater.

Blood Drive

The Pre-Health club will be hosting a blood drive on Friday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Centennial rooms of the Student Center. Sign up online at this link or contact George Nora by email at George.nora@northern.edu.

Faculty Training for Online Teaching

Danette Long, Northern’s Instructional Designer, will run the Faculty Training for Online Teaching course multiple times in October and November in an effort to provide faculty in need of this training time to complete all three sessions. Please note, per NSU Policy 2.1.8 Faculty Training for Online Teaching, “Any current faculty who have not completed Northern’s Faculty Training for Online Teaching course have until Dec. 15, 2021 to complete the training course.”

Danette is trying to make the course available at a variety of days and times this semester to accommodate varied schedules. Course completion includes live attendance for each of the three one-hour sessions. Sessions are not recorded. You may attend any of the session dates/times as long as you attend an instance of all three sessions. See the table below for available times:

Arhart Senior Recital

Abigail Arhart will hold her senior recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. Arhart, a soprano, will perform pieces by John Dowland, Carl Maria von Weber, Edvard Grieg, Alfred Bachelet and Roger Quilter. She will be accompanied by Kay Fischer.

AUCS Concert

The Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony, conducted by Dr. Christopher Stanichar, will open its season with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6 in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. The concert will feature Dr. Fritz Gechter, Associate Professor of Music at Texas A&M International University in Laredo. A Pre-Concert Conversation will take place 6:45-7:15 p.m. in the Berggren Recital Hall. All tickets are general admission and will be available at the door. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and NSU faculty/staff. Students will be admitted for free. Payment will be cash or check only; debit or credit cards will not be accepted. Unruh Senior Recital

Dylan Unruh will hold his senior recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. Unruh, who plays saxophone, will perform “Suite Hellenique” by Pedro Iturralde; “Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major K 191” by Mozart; “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss” by David R. Holsing Arr. Dylan Unruh; and “Diametrically the Same” by Nick Heilborn. He’ll be accompanied by Aldous Ulvog, piano; Tabitha Schmidt, piano, marimba and vibraphone; Eduardo Mendoza, alto sax; Charles Urevig, tenor sax; and Matt Bockorny, bari sax.

NSU WAVE Podcast

NSU WAVE, or Wolves for Advocacy, Volunteerism and Engagement, is starting a podcast called The WAVE, a podcast that promotes positive conversation about difficult topics that facilitate positive societal growth. We hope to encourage student voices and the impact we can have on campus and in the community. All students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to attend our Podcast Launch Party on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Kessler’s Champions Club in the Barnett Center. At this event, attendees will hear the first episode and learn about the purpose of the podcast, as well as enjoy hors d’oeuvres, desserts and other refreshments. Idea Pitch Competition

This competition is open to all Northern undergraduate students who have creative new ideas. You don’t need to have a full business plan, and no entrepreneurial or business experience is necessary! Applicants (either individuals or teams) will receive valuable insight from successful business people and have the opportunity to win up to $1,000 in cash prizes. At least three (and up to six) individuals or teams will walk away with a cash prize based on our judges’ rulings and the voting of audience members at the Shark Tank competition! Finalists will have five minutes to give their pitch at The Shark Tank Competition in Lincoln Gallery on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. The five-minute presentation will be followed by five minutes of Q and A from our judges. Judges will be local business people, including business owners, potential investors and representatives from development centers. Four Points Film Project

Northern is looking for participants to join the NSU Film Crew for the Four Points Film Project. A strategy meeting for the film project team will take place Thursday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m. in Dacotah Hall room 205 and online via Zoom. This event is open to all Northern students, faculty, staff and Aberdeen community members –anyone interested in learning about movie cameras, sound, makeup, props and video editing, and joining the NSU film crew. Dr. Tiffany Wang: Cultivating Healthy Interpersonal Relationships with Students

Dr. Tiffany Wang, Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Montevallo, a COPLAC school, will discuss how to cultivate healthy interpersonal relationships with students. Black Market Trust Concert

The Aberdeen Community Concert Association will present The Black Market Trust in concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12. This American pop/vocal/swing/jazz band will perform in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater, co-sponsored by NSU Fine Arts. Northern students are admitted free with student ID!

Northern Edge Award

The Northern Edge Award is a new funding opportunity that started in spring 2020. This award was designed to augment existing funding sources for undergraduate scholarship at NSU. It is especially intended to aid student projects in under-represented disciplines and/or projects that may not be eligible/competitive for other funding opportunities on campus (i.e. student travel grants, or the Competitive Research Grant). Faculty-mentored projects may receive up to $1,000 that can be used for traditional research expenses or discipline-specific costs such as travel for performances/exhibits. The application process is more streamlined, but still requires a budget detail and narrative. The application deadline this semester is 5 p.m. Nov. 12. CETL Pedagogy Grants

CETL is excited to offer its annual Pedagogy Grants once again. We will be awarding three grants of up to $1,000 to faculty and staff who are improving instruction at Northern through active learning, high-impact pedagogies and community-oriented projects! Mewes, Rausch Recital

Morgan Mewes and Dylan Rausch will hold their senior recital at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. Mewes, who plays the trombone, will perform “Sinfonia in F” by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi; “Trombone Concerto” by Launy Grondahl; and “On a Cloud” and “Cat Affairs,” a set of duets by Anna Baadsvik. She will be accompanied by Dr. William Wieland. Rausch, a tenor, will perform one set by Johannes Brahms; one set by Aaron Copland; one set by Francesco Paolo Tosti; and “E la solita storia del pastore,” by Francesco Cilea. He will be accompanied by Kay Fischer.

Wolf Talks

TRIO Student Support Services is holding the Wolf Talks speaker series in conjunction with the fall 2021 Common Read selection, “Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century,” edited by Alice Wong. The dates and topics are:

Nov. 17: Join Archie Messersmith-Bunting and his “If Everyone is ‘Fine’ – What’s Wrong with Me?” talk as he discusses the science behind your feelings, discover new ways to express what you are feeling, and learn important questions to ask when you are worried someone in your life might not be “fine.”

Davis, Quinn Recital

Naomi Jean Davis and Abbigayle Quinn will hold their senior recital at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. Davis, who plays saxophone, will perform “Fantasia” by Heitor Villa-Lobos; “Blue Caprice” by Victor Morosco; “Second Prelude” by George Gershwin, arr. Sigurd Rascher; and “Rumba” by Maurice Whitney. She will be accompanied by Aldous Ulvog. Quinn, a mezzo-soprano, will perform selections from the following song cycles: “La Regata Veneziana” by Gioachino Rossini; “Mélodies, Op. 21” by Georges Bizet; “Myrthen, Op. 25” by Robert Schumann; and “Five Elizabethan Songs” by Ivor Gurney. She will be accompanied by Tierra Cassens.

Artist Display in JFAC Gallery

The work of artist Dwayne Wilcox will be on display in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery through Nov. 30. Wilcox currently resides in Rapid City and is a member of the Oglala Sioux tribe. He is best known and celebrated for his Ledger Art, a term for predominately Plains Indian narrative drawing or painting on paper or cloth. Wilcox uses humor and recognizable aspects of contemporary culture to convey a message or narrative. Each is reflective, personal, and tells a story. Paintings by Wilcox will also be featured in this exhibition. Wilcox’s paintings are dynamic, with striking colors and engaging imagery.

Northern Lights Submissions

Northern Lights is now taking submissions for the 2022 issue of Northern Lights. Students can submit their stories, poetry, art, creative nonfiction, photography, original essays and songs to northernlights@northern.edu or message us on Facebook! Accepted submissions will be included in our literary magazine that is released in March 2022. Please submit all written works as a Word document (.docx) or a PDF (.pdf), and any artworks as a JPEG (.jpeg) or JPG (.jpg) file. Submissions are open until Dec. 31, 2021. Notice for all State Vehicle Users

If you use state vehicles or plan to use one in the future, please be sure to read the “Vehicle Policies and Procedures” handbook prior to driving. It can be found online at this link on the right side of the page, or copies are available in Becky Gilbert’s office in Facilities Management. After you read it, you need to sign the “Vehicle Rules and Regulation Form” and turn it in to Gilbert. This is also online under the policies and procedures handbook. If you have questions, contact Gilbert. Also, when you use state vehicles, please remember they need to be returned full of gas and clean, both inside and outside. The Voyager card that is with the keys can be used for a car wash. Of course, in the winter if the vehicle is parked outside, please don’t wash it.
