Northern Mental Health Week Support:

• Thank you for attending Northern Mental Health Week events. Please know there are mental health resources on and off campus to support you. The Counseling Center is available for students at 222 Avera Student Center or by calling 605-626-3007, M-F from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
• You can also call 2-1-1 for help 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. This service is free and confidential. 2-1-1 offers support for the following: substance use, suicidal thoughts, depression, relationship conflicts, stress, mental health, concerns for a loved one, isolation and trauma.
• Northeastern Mental Health Center offers a 24-hour crisis line at 605-229-1000.
• If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 9-1-1.

 

International Education Week

3 - 4 p.m. Becky Nelson will teach us how to make a Chinese paper craft. Becky is a South Dakota native who spent almost nine years in China before joining NSU and will share her experience and knowledge with us in her sessions.

Phi Beta Lambda Meeting

The next Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) meeting is Monday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Hall Room 224. Our guest speaker, Dr. John Peterson, will present on the topics of Cryptocurrency and Blockchain. NSU PBL welcomes all students!

 

Campus Forum on Budget and Finance

Faculty and staff are invited to a campus forum on Monday, Nov. 22, in Room 117 of the Johnson Fine Arts Center. NSU Vice President for Finance and Administration Veronica Paulson will provide the campus community with an update on budget and finance issues. Two sessions will be offered: noon-1:30 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m. The same topics will be covered at each session; two options are being offered in order to give more people an opportunity to attend.

 

Food Drive

The Honors Program and the Pre-Health Club are teaming up to host a Food Drive just in time for the holiday season! Lend a helping hand and donate nonperishable food items to our local Salvation Army. You can drop off your food items outside Dr. Bockorny’s office in Lincoln 118. We will be collecting food items now through Nov. 23.

 

Salvation Army Angel Tree

The Millicent Atkins School of Education invites the NSU campus to support children in our community this holiday season through the Salvation Army Angel Tree. A tree full of tags with children's wish lists are located directly across from the main office in the School of Education. Tags and gifts are due back Dec. 13, 2021.

 

Fall Plant Sale

Fall sale at the NSU greenhouse! A variety of succulents and spring-flowering bulbs (tulips, daffodils, etc.) will be available. Hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, and 8 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Nov. 17. Cash or check only. Location in the MJ greenhouse (MJ 144B). 

 

Alumni Career Day Panel

Join NSU Career Services and the NSU Foundation for the first Alumni Career Day Panel on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the JFAC Jewett Theatre. Alumni Kim Bowman (Banking and Financial Services/Economics, 2008), Taylor Hanson (Music Plan II-Vocal, 2017), Amanda Twete (English, 2006), Rebecca Christiansen (Psychology, 2001; Masters Guidance and Counseling, 2006), and Carlos Camacho (International Business, 2010) will share their experiences at Northern and provide students with firsthand accounts of how their NSU degree has helped them on their career journey. Refreshments will be served at 5:45 p.m.

 

Staff Council Meeting

Northern is creating a new group called a “Staff Council.” This council will be run by NFE and CSE staff representatives; not upper administration. We are excited to invite you to the inaugural meeting of the Staff Council on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. in Krikac Auditorium. The hope is that we can improve social connections, communications, connect departments throughout campus, and create a better working environment.

 

WAVE Podcast

WAVE, or Wolves for Advocacy, Volunteerism, and Engagement, has launched a podcast titled The WAVE, a podcast that promotes positive conversation leading to positive societal growth. The conversation is centered around difficult topics and issues plaguing Northern’s campus and the community. Do you have a voice that you want heard? Do you care about this campus and this community? If yes, please follow this link and ride The WAVE. The tide is coming in, and you need to be prepared to sink or swim. We are Wolves, and this community will hear our HOWL. Current episodes released:

SnackChat: Fail Faster w/Noah Files    

CETL's last SnackChat of the semester features Noah Files discussing how embracing our errors just might lead to positive outcomes. This event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 2:30 p.m. in MJ 203 or via this Zoom link. For those who attend in person, a FREE chips and Salsa bar will be provided.    
 

Faculty Training for Online Teaching

Danette Long, Northern’s Instructional Designer, will run the Faculty Training for Online Teaching course multiple times in October and November in an effort to provide faculty in need of this training time to complete all three sessions.  Please note, per NSU Policy 2.1.8 Faculty Training for Online Teaching, “Any current faculty who have not completed Northern’s Faculty Training for Online Teaching course have until Dec. 15, 2021 to complete the training course.” Danette is trying to make the course available at a variety of days and times this semester to accommodate varied schedules. Course completion includes live attendance for each of the three one-hour sessions. Sessions are not recorded. You may attend any of the session dates/times as long as you attend an instance of all three sessions. See the table below for available times:

Northern Theatre Presents ‘An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein’

FREE Performances will run at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 19 and 20 as well as at 3 p.m. on Nov. 20 in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Black Box Theater. "An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein" features a collection of short plays by the famed poet and writer. Each darkly comedic play revels in Silverstein’s witty—and at times shocking—sense of humor. This is a mature audiences production.

 

Andrews Senior Art Exhibition

Sasha Andrews will have her Senior Art Exhibition on display Nov. 15-Dec. 3 in the NSU President’s Gallery. Andrews will hold a public reception at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in the President’s Gallery, located on the second floor of Spafford Hall.

 

Davis, Quinn Recital

Naomi Jean Davis and Abbigayle Quinn will hold their senior recital at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. Davis, who plays saxophone, will perform “Fantasia” by Heitor Villa-Lobos; “Blue Caprice” by Victor Morosco; “Second Prelude” by George Gershwin, arr. Sigurd Rascher; and “Rumba” by Maurice Whitney. She will be accompanied by Aldous Ulvog. Quinn, a mezzo-soprano, will perform selections from the following song cycles: “La Regata Veneziana” by Gioachino Rossini; “Mélodies, Op. 21” by Georges Bizet; “Myrthen, Op. 25” by Robert Schumann; and “Five Elizabethan Songs” by Ivor Gurney. She will be accompanied by Tierra Cassens.

 

NSU Bands Concert

NSU Bands will present a concert, “Local Colors,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater. The event will include performances by the NSU Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Rolf Olson, and NSU Concert Band, conducted by Dr. Audrey Miller. Featured at the concert will be “Pink Ribbon” by Christopher Stanichar and “Hymn to a Blue Hour” by John Mackey. All tickets to the NSU Bands Concert are general admission and will be available at the door. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and NSU faculty/staff. Students will be admitted for free. Payment will be cash or check only; debit or credit cards will not be accepted. Artist Display in JFAC Gallery

The work of artist Dwayne Wilcox will be on display in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery through Nov. 30. Wilcox currently resides in Rapid City and is a member of the Oglala Sioux tribe. He is best known and celebrated for his Ledger Art, a term for predominately Plains Indian narrative drawing or painting on paper or cloth. Wilcox uses humor and recognizable aspects of contemporary culture to convey a message or narrative. Each is reflective, personal, and tells a story. Paintings by Wilcox will also be featured in this exhibition. Wilcox’s paintings are dynamic, with striking colors and engaging imagery.

 

Duvall Senior Art Exhibition

Dylan Duvall will have his Senior Art Exhibition on display Nov. 29-Dec. 13 in the NSU Avera Student Center Art Gallery. Duvall will hold public receptions on Dec. 2 and 3 in the Student Center Art Gallery, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. both days. His exhibition will consist of a range of artwork, including video, posters and photography. 

 

Northern Lights Submissions

Northern Lights is now taking submissions for the 2022 issue of Northern Lights. Students can submit their stories, poetry, art, creative nonfiction, photography, original essays and songs to northernlights@northern.edu or message us on Facebook! Accepted submissions will be included in our literary magazine that is released in March 2022. Please submit all written works as a Word document (.docx) or a PDF (.pdf), and any artworks as a JPEG (.jpeg) or JPG (.jpg) file. Submissions are open until Dec. 31, 2021. HOW TO EARN POINTS

All regular season home competitions are worth 10 points. Some games are worth 20 points and are promoted as “Double Howling Wolves Points” games. If you attend two or more separate athletic events in the same day (i.e. football and volleyball) then you will receive an additional 5 points for that day. Double-header events (i.e. basketball, baseball, and softball) are worth 10 points throughout the entirety of the doubleheader. 

All points reset each month allowing for a new opportunity each month to win the monthly prize. 

All home athletic events are FREE for NSU Students who have a valid student ticket so there is no required cost to be a part of the Howling Wolves.

All Howling Wolves members are highly encouraged to sit in the designated Student Section at all home athletic events. Become an active member of the Howling Wolves Student Fan Club and help us defend our territory! GO WOLVES!!
