Dr. Patrick Whiteley, professor of English, will retire after 29 years of service to NSU in the Department of Languages, Literature, and Communication Studies. Dr. Whiteley has been an outstanding instructor, administrator, researcher, mentor and colleague. He has taught a wide variety of courses, from the gateway English course in literary criticism to the capstone English course in modern Irish literature. His teaching has always shown great personal dedication to individual students, a high degree of integrity and a keen regard for the highest academic standards. As an administrator, he has been instrumental in implementing many important changes to the curriculum, extending his service to the department beyond his tenure of six years as coordinator. Each semester, he has organized and overseen group-advising meetings for English majors. Recently, he orchestrated the NSU English promotional video, creating a script and collaborating with colleagues to execute its production. A modern British literature specialist, Dr. Whiteley has published scholarly articles on various authors, including Robert Bolt and Muriel Spark, as well as a book, “Knowledge and Experimental Realism in Conrad, Lawrence, and Woolf.” His recent article on contemporary Irish writer William Trevor was published in the prestigious journal New Hibernia Review. As a mentor and colleague, Dr. Whiteley is known for his humor, wit and generosity. He has hosted regular gatherings at his house, inviting faculty to discuss the English Program while they devour sandwiches and tasty beverages. On campus, he has been a stalwart presence, always available and eager to mentor students and colleagues. In short, Dr. Whiteley is beloved by his students and his colleagues, and he will be dearly missed. We thank him for his myriad contributions to Northern and wish him success and happiness in his next chapter.
