Account for Students Affected by Fire

Two accounts have been created for the NSU students affected by last week’s fire. Contribute to the GoFundMe account by clicking here, and the YouCaring account by clicking here. Donations may also be dropped off at the NSU International Programs Office on the second floor of Lincoln Hall.

Student Viewing Party

A viewing party for NSU students will be held in the NSU Team Room (upstairs in the Barnett Center) to watch the Wolves men’s basketball game on Tuesday night. The game starts at 8:30 p.m. Snacks and pop will be available. Come cheer on the Wolves!

Fourth Annual Lamont-Rhodes Lecture Series

The fourth annual Lamont-Rhodes Lecture Series presents Eric Snodgrass, director of atmospheric sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 7:30-10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center. A breakfast buffet will take place at 7:30 a.m., with the presentation at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $20/person or $125/group of eight. ‘Bach’s Lunch’ is March 21

The NSU Chamber Singers will celebrate the 333rd birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach with the eighth annual “Bach’s Lunch” on Wednesday, March 21. The concert will begin at noon at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave. S.E. After the program, the church will provide a light lunch for performers and audience members. Admission is a freewill donation to NSU music scholarships at the door. NSU students are admitted for free.

Noon Forum on Wednesday

This week’s NSU Noon Forum, “Bach’s Lunch” with Dr. Tim Woods, will take place Wednesday, March 21, at noon in Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Northern South Dakota Science and Mathematics Fair

NSU will hold the 35th annual Northern South Dakota Science and Mathematics Fair on Thursday, March 22. Approximately 60 judges from surrounding areas will be judging the projects of high school juniors and seniors from 20 surrounding schools in the area. Projects will be judged in the morning and will be open to public viewing from 1 to 7 p.m. only. There will be a science fair awards ceremony at 6 p.m., held in the upstairs gym of the Barnett Center. This awards ceremony is free and open to the public. In conjunction with the science fair, the junior and senior high science bowls will be held, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The public is invited to attend this event.

Business Club/PBL in Minot

The Business Club/PBL will be traveling to Minot, N.D., on Thursday, March 22, to compete in the Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) competition. There are 18 NSU students competing. Each student can compete in up to three events. The students will return to Aberdeen on Saturday, March 24. Drs. Amber Mathern and Kristi Bockorny will accompany the students.

Reliabank Visit on Thursday

On Thursday, March 22, a team of students from the School of Business will travel to Watertown to study and interview representatives of Reliabank, in connection with the team’s participation in the 2018 Community Bank Case Study Competition. The Community Bank Case Study competition is an academic competition where undergraduate student teams partner with local community banks to conduct original case studies. For the 2018 competition, student teams will study how community banks utilize technology to streamline processes and better serve their consumers. The competition is facilitated by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS), the nationwide organization of banking regulators from all 50 states and the U.S. territories.

Environmental Club Meeting

The Environmental Club will meet on Thursday, March 22, at 6 p.m. in MJ 201. After the meeting, we will go over to the sculpture studio to build birdhouses. Please join us! 

LGBTQ and Allies Forum

The LGBTQ and Allies group will be hosting a forum on how to support the LGBTQ friends and family members in your life, as well as the LGBTQ community as a whole. The forum will be held in Centennial Rooms C and D on March 22 at 6 p.m. Members of the LGBTQ community will share their coming out experiences and what types of support they wished they would have had during that time in their lives. They will also discuss the current political climate for the LGBTQ community and what you can do to be an ally.

Glow Bowling

Glow Bowling will take place on Thursday, March 22, from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the Village Bowl, sponsored by CAB. Admission is only $1 for NSU students.

Escape Rooms

Have you experienced the excitement of trying to get out of an Escape Room? Try getting out of one of the two themed rooms that will be set up on campus on Friday, March 23, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center, sponsored by CAB. See if you can escape before time runs out!

The Hook Up

The Hook Up is coming to campus on March 23 at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in Berggren Recital Hall in JFAC. Contact Janie.Borkowski@northern.edu with any questions.

Employee Performance Award Nominations

We are in the planning stages for our Employee Service and Recognition lunch. That means it’s also time to recognize your co-workers, supervisors and faculty for the Employee Performance awards.

You can nominate NSU staff in the following categories:

  • Student Service Award – Support Services
  • Teamwork Award
  • Community Leader Service Award

Banking Advisory Board Meeting

On Tuesday, March 27, the School of Business hosts the Banking Advisory Board for its semi-annual meeting to assist NSU in its pursuit of excellence in the Banking and Financial Services degree offerings.

Northern’s Got Talent

Northern’s Got Talent is on March 28 at 7 p.m. in Krikac Auditorium. We are searching for new and unique talent. Prizes will go to The People’s Choice, The Judges’ Choice, Most Unique, and The People’s Choice Art. Registration is open now at the online registration form. Greenhouse Worker Needed

The NSU Greenhouse is seeking a student worker for the summer. The individual must live in the Aberdeen area as the primary responsibility will be watering plants (including on some weekends). Senior Tradition Luncheon

Graduating seniors are invited to attend the NSU Foundation’s Senior Tradition Luncheon, which will be held on Wednesday, April 18, at noon at the NSU Student Center. Seniors will enjoy a complimentary lunch, learn about the NSU Alumni Association, and will be invited to join a long-standing Northern tradition. Book by Former NSU Students at Wolf Shoppe

Harley L. Zephier and Robin L. Zephier, brothers and former Roncalli and NSU students, have written a book entitled WARRIOR IS. The story is based on the life of Mato Niyanpi and his true personal experiences told as family oral history passed down through the generations of his lineal descendants. WARRIOR IS offers an indigenous perspective of the spiritual journey of this human being, and the life of the Lakota during the changing times. It narrates the events from creation times to weeks after the Greasy Grass Battle at the Little Bighorn in Montana on June 25, 1876. Harley and Robin are Mato Niyanpi’s great grandsons. WARRIOR IS available at the NSU Wolf Shoppe. 

Confucius Institute Music Lesson Series Continues

Join the Confucius Institute for free introductory group lessons in traditional Chinese performing arts. This semester we feature the erhu, a Chinese two-stringed fiddle, which will be taught by Chinese exchange student Yaxuan Ji. No experience is necessary! Lessons run weekly on Mondays at 2-3 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. until April 9 in the Student Center by the ping pong table. The program is open to all NSU students, faculty and staff. Refreshments will be served!

Taekwondo Club Meeting Tuesday

The NSU Taekwondo Club will be meeting every Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. upstairs in the Dacotah Hall Gym. Anyone is free to attend. Workout clothes are recommended. No prior experience is necessary.

Do you live on campus and want to make a difference in the residence halls? Join RHA (Residence Hall Association) today! We meet every Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Student Center Maroon Room. Cru Bible Study held every Tuesday

Cru will be having Bible study every Tuesday at 8 p.m. in MJ101. Cru, formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ, is a student group passionate about connecting people to Jesus Christ. All are welcome to join – people who aren't sure what they believe, people who are curious about their faith, people who are new believers, and people who are strong in their faith. The group will be answering questions such as, "Is there more to life than this?"; "Why did Jesus die?"; "How and why should I read the Bible?"; and many others.

Sanford Faculty Development Award

The “Sanford Faculty Development Award” has been created to recognize and provide support of up to $1,000 for three faculty members in the following categories of faculty development:

  • Curricular and course development
  • Grant and extra-mural funding procurement
  • Discipline specific research activities

Faculty members applying for funding must submit an electronic copy of the completed application to the college/school Dean by Monday, April 2, 2018. Guidelines and an application form are available online.

Jazz and Chess Night

Jazz and Chess Night takes place Wednesdays at the NSU Dining Hall. Chess sets are available at 5 p.m. Music will start around 5:30. For more information, contact Art Marmorstein at 605-626-2608 or marmorsa@northern.edu.

NSU Partner Announces New Scholarship

NSU partner the University of Jinan announces a new graduate studies scholarship for an M.S. in Computer Science. School of Information Science & Engineering, University of Jinan (UJN), China, is seeking highly motivated M.S. students for a three-year program in Computer Science on a full scholarship. The entire program is in English, including ALL courses, supervision, papers, thesis and other such activities.

Scholarship Coverage:

1) A waiver of fee for registration and tuition;

2) Free on-campus accommodation;

3) Medical insurance;

4) Monthly living allowance (depending on qualifications and experience).

YOGA Classes

Yoga classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the upper studio room in Dacotah gym. The classes, sponsored by wellness, are open to all NSU students, faculty and staff.
