Utility Work on 12th Avenue

From Monday to Friday (April 22-26), Northwestern Energy and Midco will be burying utility lines along 12th Avenue from the west side of the Johnson Fine Arts Center to the east side of State Street. This work is related to the Regional Science Education Center. This area will become very congested with equipment and workers from both of these companies. Please avoid traveling on 12th Avenue if possible. If you must travel on 12th Avenue, please use extreme caution.

Provost Finalist Forums

Northern State University has named three finalists for the position of NSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The finalists will visit campus beginning Monday, with open forums held at the following times and locations:

  • Dr. John Ernst: Monday, April 22, 4-4:45 p.m., Williams Library Rotunda
  • Dr. Michael Wanous: Monday, April 29, 4-4:45 p.m.; Missouri River Room
  • Dr. Tim Crowley: Wednesday, May 1, 4-4:45 p.m.; Missouri River Room

International Student Sash Ceremony

The Office of International Programs welcomes you to attend the Spring 2019 International Student Sash Ceremony taking place on Tuesday, April 23, at 5:15 p.m. in JFAC Room 181. Eighteen international students will receive graduation sashes representing NSU and their home countries. After the ceremony, cake and refreshments will be served.

NSU Noon Forum

Reminder: There will be NO Noon Forum this Wednesday, April 24, due to the Employee Service Awards Luncheon.

Employees Recognition Lunch

A reminder: The annual Employee Recognition lunch and awards event will be held April 24 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the NSU Student Center Centennial Rooms.

Northern Lights Launch

Northern Lights, NSU's literary magazine, will launch its annual issue on Wednesday, April 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be free food, a reading and an award ceremony for the best poem, short story and art piece. And, of course, magazines will be available for purchase. The launch party will be held in the Lincoln Gallery. Everyone is welcome!

NSU Plant Sale

The NSU greenhouse is having a Plant Sale Thursday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to noon. Stop by the greenhouse classroom in MJ 144 to see our new succulents, double daffodils, geraniums, Aloe vera and more! Proceeds benefit science scholarships and a science fair award.

Avera Health and Wellness Center Beginners Class

Want to start working out but aren't sure where to start? Curious to see what is offered in the Avera Health and Wellness Center (located in the Barnett Center)? Attend the Avera Health and Wellness Center Beginners Class every Tuesday and Thursday through April 25, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The class will include friendly and professional instructors, tutorials on how to use each machine, workout programs provided and optional group workouts. Community Spotlight

“Night in a Car for Journey Home,” a homelessness simulation that challenges the community to spend the night in a car so others don’t have to, will take place 7 p.m. April 26 to 7 a.m. April 27 in the Aberdeen Police Department parking lot. This event shines a spotlight on the hidden aspect of homelessness that many in our community experience – living in their cars – while raising money for Journey Home! Day of Champions

On Saturday, April 27, NSU student-athletes will team up with the United Way of Northeastern South Dakota to give back to the community at the 17th annual Day of Champions. The Wolves will spend the day volunteering at various community and regional organizations, performing tasks from cleaning to painting to yard cleanup. The Day of Champions started in 2002 as a collaborative effort between the NSU Athletic Department and the United Way. Follow the United Way of Northeastern South Dakota on Facebook to keep up to date with the event.

‘Pet Your Stress Away’

TRIO SSS is hosting a “Pet Your Stress Away” event at noon Wednesday, May 1, on the campus green. The Aberdeen Area Humane Society will bring dogs to campus for students and staff to interact with as a stress relief activity. Donations will be collected in DH 101 from now until May 1 and will be gifted to the Humane Society during their visit to campus. Some items to consider donating are: dry dog and cat food, liquid laundry detergent, dish soap, 13-gallon trash bags, liquid hand soap, paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, hand sanitizer and Ziploc sandwich bags.

Distinguished Alumni Banquet

Please join alumni and friends on Friday, May 3, at 5:30 p.m. at the Dakota Event Center to celebrate the induction of four Distinguished Alumni. Social Hour will be 5:30-6:30 p.m. with dinner and a program to follow. We want to provide a huge “welcome back” to these successful NSU graduates. Please RSVP to nsualumni@northern.edu by Friday, April 26, if you would like to attend. Tickets are $25/adults and $10/children. Spring Commencement

Northern State University spring commencement ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, in the NSU Barnett Center. Aberdeen Public School District Superintendent Dr. Becky Guffin, a 2019 NSU Distinguished Alumna, will deliver the commencement address. Learn more at the NSU Graduation and Commencement Page.

Chinese Painting, Ping Pong Workshops on Tuesdays

It’s not too late to join the spring semester Chinese painting and ping-pong workshops every Tuesday at NSU! Landscape painting by Ms. Yaqian Wang is at 1 p.m. in the NSU Student Center. Ping-pong by Mr. Lihe Liu is at 3 p.m. at the Dacotah Hall gym. No registration is needed! For more information on all of our programs, please follow the NSU Confucius Institute on Facebook.

‘Pursuing Palestine’ exhibition in JFAC Gallery

Artist Noelle Rasmussen’s “Pursuing Palestine” exhibition will be on display in the NSU Fine Arts Center Gallery through June 7.

Be Part of Wolves Watch

Looking for an opportunity to serve your campus community while being paid? Here is your opportunity to become involved. Campus Safety is looking for students who are interested in being a part of Wolves Watch. The primary purpose of Wolves Watch is to meet fellow students anywhere on campus and walk with them to ensure safe arrival at their destination (library, parking lot, residence hall, etc.). Trained members will also be eligible to work as additional security for large university events. Sign up online using the Wolves Watch Application.

Name Tag Orders

NSU Communications and Marketing orders name tags for employees once a month. To request a name tag for the next campus-wide order, fill out this online form.
