Employee Service Awards – Deadline Today

The Employee Service and Recognition lunch will be held May 1 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the NSU Student Center Centennial Rooms. Please RSVP to susan.bostian@northern.edu. NSU staff members may be nominated in the following categories:

• Excellence in Performance
• Excellence in Management
• Student Service Award – Support Services
• Teamwork Award
• Community Leader Service Award

The nomination form is on the NSU portalunder Human Resources and then under HR Links called ‘NSU Employee Performance Award Nomination Form.’ The deadline for awards submission is April 23.

DiltsSenior Art Exhibition
Kate Dilts’ senior art exhibition will be on display in the President’s Gallery in Spafford Hall from April 23 to May 5. A reception for the exhibition will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 23 in the President’s Gallery. Displayed work in the exhibition includes graphic design pieces, as well as digitally altered film and digital photography, mounted and displayed in resin.

NSU Plant Sale
There will be a plant sale in MJ 144B (attached to the greenhouse) on Monday, April 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesday, April 24, from 1 to 5 p.m. 

‘A Celestial Celebration’ on April 23
The NSU Choirs will offer their spring concert, titled “a Celestial Celebration,” at 7:30 p.m. April 23 in the Johnson Fine Art Center’s Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater. ‘A Celestial Celebration’ will feature the NSU Concert Choir, Early Music Ensemble, Chamber Singers and special guests, the Aberdeen Central High School A Cappella under the direction of Susan Appl. Admission is $5 for adults, $2.50 for NSU faculty/staff, and free for school-aged children or NSU students with ID.

Fesler Senior Art Exhibition 
Emily Fesler’s senior art exhibition will be on display in the Northern State University Spafford Hall Gallery from April 23 to May 4. A reception for the exhibition will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 4 in the Spafford Hall Gallery. Displayed work in the exhibition includes animation, illustration and photography pieces. Most of Fesler’s works are macro photography shots.

Noon Forum on Wednesday
This week’s NSU Noon Forum, “The Last Lecture He Ever Gave: Memories of Coach Don Meyer” with Tom Orr, will take place Wednesday, April 25, at noon in the Williams Library Round Room.

NSU Swimming Team to sell Cotton Candy
The NSU Swimming team will be selling cotton candy on the campus green Wednesday, April 25 through Friday, April 27 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The cotton candy will be $3 for 1 bag or $5 for 2 bags. All of the money will support the NSU Women’s Swim Program.

‘A Writer Reads’ Capstone Event 
At the capstone event, students taking fiction writing will give a reading of their work. This will take place in the Williams Library Round Room from 4 to 4:45 p.m. April 26. “A Writer Reads” events are sponsored by funding from the South Dakota Humanities Council. Volunteers Needed for Barrier Awareness Day
The Mayor’s Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities will be hosting the annual Barrier Awareness Day for area fifth graders from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Aberdeen Civic Arena. The committee is looking for volunteers for the event. The fifth graders will get to learn and experience a variety of disabilities such as physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, blind/visual impairments, deaf/hard of hearing, autism and more. If students are interested in volunteering all day, just during the morning session between 8 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., or during the afternoon session from 11:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., please email krista.bau@northern.edu. Lunch is provided for volunteers.

Spring Swing Dance
The NSU Jazz Ensembles will host a Spring Swing Dance at the Aberdeen Eagles on Friday, April 27. Doors for the event will open at 6 p.m., with music beginning as early as 6:30 p.m. NSU students will perform jazz standards from the musical “Sondheim on Sondheim.” Groups performing include the NSU Jazz Combo, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, 2 O’Clock Jazz Ensemble, and the student-run group "Jet Lagged." Vocalists with the band include NSU music faculty members Dr. Darci Bultema, making her NSU Swing Dance debut singing a nightclub version of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance," and Dr. Marla Fogderud, singing a smoky rendition of “Tenderly.” NSU vocal majors will also perform alongside the bands throughout the evening. Tickets are $10 for all who attend and will be available at the door, beginning at 6 p.m. The Aberdeen Eagles is located at 316 S. 2nd St., Aberdeen.

Art Exhibition Reception is May 4
Danny Quinn’s senior art exhibition will be on display in the NSU Student Center Gallery from April 23 to May 4. A reception for the exhibition will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 4 in the Student Center Gallery. Displayed art in the exhibition includes graphic design work, including both corporate type design work as well as digital artwork.

2018 Distinguished Alumni Banquet is May 4
The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Northern State University Alumni Association. This prestigious award recognizes graduates who’ve attained extraordinary distinction in his or her professional field or life and serves to honor alumni who’ve made significant contributions to society, the university and their community.

Awardees are honored annually in the presence of the alumni, students, families and community members to celebrate this important tradition.

The 2018 Distinguished Alumni winners are:

-School of Business Award Winner and NSU Commencement speaker: Carolyn (Stevens) Thompson, J.D., Class of 1991
-Millicent M. Atkins School of Education Award Winner: Bryan DeBates, Class of 1993
-School of Fine Arts Award Winner: Christopher Maunu, Class of 2003
-College of Arts and Sciences Award Winner: Rochelle Nolte, M.D., Class of 1992

Chinese Summer Camp
The Confucius Institute’s Second Annual K-5 Chinese Summer Camp will be held 8:30-11:30 a.m. June 4-8 at NSU. The camp is open to ages 6-11, and the cost is $40 for the week. Space is limited. Register by May 21 by emailing confucius@northern.eduor calling 605-626-3293.

Wolves Buddies Registration Open
Registration is now open for the 2018-19 Northern State University Wolves Buddies program sponsored by Culver's. Wolves Buddies is open to boys and girls in eighth grade and below, with exclusive benefits throughout the year. Each Wolves Buddies membership includes a 2018-19 season pass for all home games (excluding NSIC and NCAA postseason), T-shirt, $1.99 kids meals on game day, special invites to NSU camps, clinics and events, a birthday card from Thunder the Wolf, and the opportunity to be a Wolves Buddy of the Game. Taekwondo Club Meeting Tuesday
The NSU Taekwondo Club will be meeting every Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. upstairs in the Dacotah Hall Gym. Anyone is free to attend. Workout clothes are recommended. No prior experience is necessary.

Do you live on campus and want to make a difference in the residence halls? Join RHA (Residence Hall Association) today! We meet every Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Student Center Maroon Room. Cru Bible Study held every Tuesday
Cru will be having Bible study every Tuesday at 8 p.m. in MJ101. Cru, formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ, is a student group passionate about connecting people to Jesus Christ. All are welcome to join – people who aren't sure what they believe, people who are curious about their faith, people who are new believers, and people who are strong in their faith. The group will be answering questions such as, "Is there more to life than this?"; "Why did Jesus die?"; "How and why should I read the Bible?"; and many others.

Jazz and Chess Night 
Jazz and Chess Night takes place Wednesdays at the NSU Dining Hall. Chess sets are available at 5 p.m. Music will start around 5:30. For more information, contact Art Marmorstein at 605-626-2608 or marmorsa@northern.edu.

Volunteer Opportunity
The Reach & Rise mentoring program trains adult volunteers to provide mentoring services to young people ages 6-17 for one year. We aim to help youth develop tools to cope with issues such as low self-esteem, family and peer conflicts, problems at school, and to improve their decision-making skills.The YMCA is currently looking for volunteers for this program.
