Primrose Arts and Lecture Series: 'Everything you didn’t know about Chinese tea'
NSU’s Primrose Arts and Lecture Series will take place Tuesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Aberdeen’s Primrose Retirement Community, 1701 Third Ave. S.E. On April 10, Confucius Institute faculty will present “Everything you didn’t know about Chinese tea.” The event is free and open to the public. This spring at Northern State University, “A Writer Reads” will feature readings by three visiting writers, as well as a capstone reading by students taking fiction writing. On Tuesday, April 10, Elissa Dickey will give a public reading of her work in the Williams Library Round Room from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Dickey, a writer for the NSU Communications and Marketing Department, is an author of upmarket suspense represented by Sharon Pelletier of Dystel, Goderich and Bourret in New York City. “A Writer Reads” events are sponsored by funding from the South Dakota Humanities Council. NSU Theater's 'Sondheim on Sondheim'
The NSU Theater production of “Sondheim on Sondheim” will be performed in the Johnson Fine Art Center’s Black Box Theater nightly April 10-14 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the production are $18 for the general public. Tickets are $9 for NSU faculty and staff. NSU students are admitted free with ID (only available at the box office). Tickets can be purchased at the Johnson Fine Arts Center Box Office or online via the School of Fine Arts Page (northern.edu/artsnsu). Box office hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, noon-4 p.m. The box office opens two hours before the show begins on performance nights. The JFAC box office phone number is 605-626-2900. Noon Forum on Wednesday
This week’s NSU Noon Forum, “Visualizing Crime and Justice: A Collaborative Learning Project” with Gratia Brown and Courtney Waid, will take place Wednesday, April 11, at noon in the Williams Library Round Room.
Undergraduate Research, Creativity and Scholarship Forum
The upcoming forum to celebrate research and scholarly activities is being held in the NSU Beulah Williams Library on April 12. In general, the line-up will be as follows:

Our keynote speaker this year is Ms. Tracy Rosenberg, a conservationist and writer from the area. Below is the title and a brief description of her presentation. Please join us for this year’s event.
Ecological Fixer Upper: From Pasture to Grassland Habitat
Rosenberg will share her five-year journey of restoring nearly 1,000 acres of native grasslands in Grant County. Her restoration project on previously degraded land has yielded challenges and surprises. She’ll discuss and demonstrate through a slideshow the practices of prescribed fire, wildfire, prairie reconstruction, integrated pest management, infrastructure design for rotational grazing, herd management, water quality issues and eco-tours on the land.
Governor’s Giant Vision Competition
On Thursday, April 12, Olaf Hanson, NSU School of Business student, will be participating in the Governor’s Giant Vision competition in Sioux Falls. NSU School of Business student Ty Dillabough also qualified but is unable to attend the event. The competition is being held in conjunction with the Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) Conference, which NSU instructor Julie Johnson will be attending.
Kobayashi/Gray Duo Recital
An internationally known violin/piano duo will visit NSU on Thursday, April 12. The Kobayashi/Gray Duo will present a master class at 4-5 p.m. and perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Both events will be held in NSU’s Krikac Auditorium and are free and open to the public. Men's Basketball Team Celebration
Celebrate the 2017-18 Northern State men’s basketball team on Thursday, April 12, at 7 p.m. from Wachs Arena and the Barnett Center. Join the NSU student-athletes, coaches and administration as they recap the historic season and look to the future. Hear from NSU President Dr. Tim Downs, Director of Athletics Josh Moon, head coach Paul Sather and Wolves student-athletes on stage during the celebration. The Northern State Wolf Pack Pep Band, as well as the Northern State cheerleaders, will be in attendance to rally the crowd. Fans will be able to see the NSIC and NCAA Regional Championship trophies in-person throughout the celebration. Following the on-stage presentation, kids will be given the opportunity to take pictures with the team and get an autographed team photo.
Business Club Food Cart
The Business Club will be offering treats for sale via a traveling food cart on Friday, April 13, from 8 a.m. to noon to help raise funds for the National PBL Conference in June.
Band Extravaganza II
The Northern State University Symphonic Band and Concert Band will perform their “Band Extravaganza II: A Musical Smorgasbord!” concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 15, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center’s Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater. This free concert will feature a large variety of band favorites. The NSU Concert Band is directed by Dr. Audrey Miller and the Symphonic Band is directed by Dr. Rolf Olson. Chinese Summer Camp
The Confucius Institute’s Second Annual K-5 Chinese Summer Camp will be held 8:30-11:30 a.m. June 4-8 at NSU. The camp is open to ages 6-11, and the cost is $40 for the week. Space is limited. Register by May 21 by emailing confucius@northern.edu or calling 605-626-3293.
Wolves Buddies Registration Open
Registration is now open for the 2018-19 Northern State University Wolves Buddies program sponsored by Culver's. Wolves Buddies is open to boys and girls in eighth grade and below, with exclusive benefits throughout the year. Each Wolves Buddies membership includes a 2018-19 season pass for all home games (excluding NSIC and NCAA postseason), T-shirt, $1.99 kids meals on game day, special invites to NSU camps, clinics and events, a birthday card from Thunder the Wolf, and the opportunity to be a Wolves Buddy of the Game. Wage Negotiation - $tart $mart Workshop
AAUW is hosting a $tart $mart workshop led by Dr. Audrey Miller (certified Start Smart Facilitator). This workshop will give you the skills and confidence to successfully negotiate your salary and benefits. You will also learn how to quantify the market value of your education, skills and experience; how to conduct objective market research and determine a fair target salary; and how to create a strategic pitch and respond to salary offers. Wingate Author Reading Rescheduled
This spring at Northern State University, “A Writer Reads” will feature readings by three visiting writers. The reading by Steven Wingate, a professor of English at South Dakota State University, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 17. Wingate will present on digital storytelling in the Williams Library Round Room from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Wingate’s books will be available for sale at his reading, and he will be happy to sign them. “A Writer Reads” events are sponsored by funding from the South Dakota Humanities Council. Spring Sash Ceremony
Please join the Office of International Programs staff members to celebrate international student graduates at the spring sash ceremony on Thursday, April 19, at 5:15 p.m. in the JFAC Blue Room. This year’s ceremony will feature nearly 20 international student graduates.
Senior Tradition Luncheon
Graduating seniors are invited to attend the NSU Foundation’s Senior Tradition Luncheon, which will be held on Wednesday, April 18, at noon at the NSU Student Center. Seniors will enjoy a complimentary lunch, learn about the NSU Alumni Association, and will be invited to join a long-standing Northern tradition. Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony Concert
The Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony will perform the closing concert of its 98th Season on Saturday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The theme of the program is “War and Peace” and includes music by Handel, Haydn, and Tchaikovsky as well as music from films in the Star Wars series, “Dunkirk”, and the video game World of Warcraft. The Symphony will be joined by the NSU Concert Choir, the Aberdeen Community Chorus, and members of the brass section of the NSU Symphonic Band. Tickets for the concert are $18 for adults. All students are admitted free of charge. Tickets are available online, or at the JFAC box office, which is open from noon-4:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and two hours before concert time. ‘A Writer Reads’ Capstone Event
At the capstone event, students taking fiction writing will give a reading of their work. This will take place in the Williams Library Round Room from 4 to 4:45 p.m. April 26. “A Writer Reads” events are sponsored by funding from the South Dakota Humanities Council. Volunteers Needed for Barrier Awareness Day
The Mayor’s Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities will be hosting the annual Barrier Awareness Day for area fifth graders from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Aberdeen Civic Arena. The committee is looking for volunteers for the event. The fifth graders will get to learn and experience a variety of disabilities such as physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, blind/visual impairments, deaf/hard of hearing, autism and more. If students are interested in volunteering all day, just during the morning session between 8 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., or during the afternoon session from 11:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., please email krista.bau@northern.edu. Lunch is provided for volunteers.
Art Exhibition Reception is May 4
Danny Quinn’s senior art exhibition will be on display in the NSU Student Center Gallery from April 23 to May 4. A reception for the exhibition will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 4 in the Student Center Gallery. Displayed art in the exhibition includes graphic design work, including both corporate type design work as well as digital artwork.
2018 Distinguished Alumni Banquet is May 4
The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Northern State University Alumni Association. This prestigious award recognizes graduates who’ve attained extraordinary distinction in his or her professional field or life and serves to honor alumni who’ve made significant contributions to society, the university and their community.
Awardees are honored annually in the presence of the alumni, students, families and community members to celebrate this important tradition.

Confucius Institute Music Lesson Series Continues
Join the Confucius Institute for free introductory group lessons in traditional Chinese performing arts. This semester we feature the erhu, a Chinese two-stringed fiddle, which will be taught by Chinese exchange student Yaxuan Ji. No experience is necessary! Lessons run weekly on Mondays at 2-3 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. until April 9 in the Student Center by the ping pong table. The program is open to all NSU students, faculty and staff. Refreshments will be served!
Greenhouse Worker Needed
The NSU Greenhouse is seeking a student worker for the summer. The individual must live in the Aberdeen area as the primary responsibility will be watering plants (including on some weekends). Cru Bible Study held every Tuesday
Cru will be having Bible study every Tuesday at 8 p.m. in MJ101. Cru, formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ, is a student group passionate about connecting people to Jesus Christ. All are welcome to join – people who aren't sure what they believe, people who are curious about their faith, people who are new believers, and people who are strong in their faith. The group will be answering questions such as, "Is there more to life than this?"; "Why did Jesus die?"; "How and why should I read the Bible?"; and many others.
Jazz and Chess Night
