Welcome Back Sale at the NSU Wolf Shoppe

Welcome back, Wolves! The NSU Wolf Shoppe will have a Welcome Back Sale Monday, Jan. 13, through Friday, Jan. 17. Take 20 percent off all clothing and giftware!

After-school Tutoring Openings at Reading Clinic

The NSU Reading Clinic has openings in its upcoming tutoring schedule starting Jan. 13. The Reading Clinic, located in Williams Library on the NSU campus, is an after-school tutoring program providing literacy assessment and instruction for students in grades 1-12. Smudge Ceremony

Northern State University is dedicated to the recognition of tribal traditions and ceremonies that complement the holistic well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native students. We will smudge Tuesday, Jan. 14 from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. We come together in Spafford 106 and have cultural education time to talk about what smudging is, the importance it symbolizes in Indigenous culture and a time of reflection. The American Indian Circle Program would like to invite the NSU campus community to come and participate in our monthly smudge. Everyone is welcome!

Free Zumba

Come Zumba into the New Year with Lara Nelson, every Tuesday and Thursday from Jan. 14 through March 5, 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Studio Room of the Dacotah Hall Recreation Center. This is free for NSU students and staff!

Winter Club Rush and [REVERSE] Career Fair

All students are invited to this year’s Winter Club Rush on Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Student Center. A social hour will take place 3-4 p.m. with appetizers and mocktails! You won’t want to miss this great opportunity to get involved during the Spring Semester. For questions about the event or if your club is interested in having a booth, email Janie Borkowski. Club leaders, members and advisors are invited to participate in a [REVERSE] Career Fair during Winter Club Rush. The [REVERSE] Career Fair will flip the traditional fair format; student organizations will highlight their leadership, service projects and more, while local business partners network and engage with student groups. Local professionals will be available from 3 to 4 p.m. during Winter Club Rush on Jan. 15t. For more information, please email NSU Career Services.   

Feminist Club Meets Jan. 15

Northern's Feminist Club is looking for volunteers who would like to speak in their performance of “Vagina Monologues” on Feb. 14. The 'Vagina Monologues' is an episodic play written by Eve Ensler that explores the female experience through the eyes of women of various ages, races, sexualities, etc. Volunteers would choose a piece to perform (either alone or with other volunteers) and attend 2-3 rehearsal practices. Those interested in volunteering, viewing the “Vagina Monologues” script, or acquiring more information should email NSU Feminist Club president Mar Fesler or attend the club meeting at 4 p.m. Jan. 15 in NSU Library room 213.

50th Annual S.D. Jazz Festival

The South Dakota Jazz Festival celebrates its 50th year on Thursday, Jan. 23, at Northern State University. The festival will feature No. 1 selling vocalist and trombonist Aubrey Logan, who will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the NSU JFAC Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater. Tickets for the concert will be available at the door and are $10 for adults and $5 for children. The concert is free for NSU students with ID and jazz festival participants. The concert is also an Aberdeen Community Concert for those who have purchased tickets to the concert series. For more information, please contact Dr. Grant Manhart at Grant.Manhart@northern.edu.

International Pianist Dr. to Visit NSU

International pianist Dr. Pei-Lei Lin, assistant professor of piano at the University of Jinan in China, will perform a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, in NSU’s Krikac Auditorium. The recital is free and open to the public. Also during her visit to Northern, Lin’s schedule will include:

  • Wednesday, Jan. 29: Master class/presentation for all music students; 3-4 p.m.; Krikac Auditorium.
  • Friday, Jan. 31: Teaching piano lessons and touring Northern campus; 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 1: Speaking to Aberdeen Area Music Teachers at annual Piano Day/Piano Carnival; 1-3 p.m.; NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center.

Alternative Spring Break

This year, Alternative Spring Break is traveling to Denver to work in urban agriculture and food insecurity. All students are invited to apply! The following information sessions will be held: 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, Library Rotunda; and 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, Student Center Mezzanine. For more information, email Megan Frewaldt.

NSU-Primrose Arts and Lecture Series

The 2019-20 NSU-Primrose Arts and Lecture Series will take place Tuesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. throughout the academic year at Aberdeen's Primrose Retirement Community, located at 1701 Third Avenue S.E. Presenters and topics are as follows:

Feb. 11: "The Worst Hard Times: The 1930s Depression in South Dakota"; presented by Dr. Ric Dias, Professor of History.

March 10: "Jazz through the Decades"; presented by Mr. Fritz Hemke, Assistant Professor of Music.

April 14: "Talkin’ like the Bard:  Demystifying Shakespeare’s Language"; presented by Dr. Kane Anderson, Assistant Professor of Theatre.

Scholarship Invitational

The annual School of Fine Arts Scholarship Invitational will be Feb. 21-22 in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. Registrations for the event, open to high school seniors, are preferred by Friday, Feb. 14; however, applications are accepted at any time, and arrangements may be made for individual student visits throughout the spring semester. Spring Break Power Outage Planned

There is an essential campus power outage scheduled for the weekend of March 7-8, 2020 (spring break). We ask that you please begin the process of planning for how this outage may affect your individual areas and students. More information on the outage will be shared after the holidays.

Save the Date: Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum

The annual NSU Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2020. All students participating in scholarly activity are invited to participate. Registration details to be announced in January.

Students: If you have a senior recital or art exhibition coming up, please fill out a form so NSU Communications and Marketing can help you promote your event. Faculty/Staff Ticket Pricing:

NSU Athletics offers the following ticket pricing for Northern faculty and staff:

  • 50 percent off single-game general admission ticket (price varies with each event)
  • Buy one at regular price, get one free general admission season ticket (soccer, volleyball, football, wrestling, men’s and women’s basketball are all ticketed)             
    • Regular price: $300
  • 50 percent off reserved season tickets (section A only – chair back seats for basketball)
    • Regular price: $400
    • Faculty/staff price: $200
    • You will receive a Wolves Club season ticket book with individual tickets for each game!
    • Faculty with children can have adjacent chair back seats (in section A) reserved for their kids upon signing them up for Wolves Buddies - $40 per child, $99 for three or more kids.
