International Education Week, Nov. 11-15
It’s International Education Week! This week, Nov. 11-15, 2019, is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences. Kahoot Game in Science Center Lobby
An awareness event will be held Nov. 12 for the new Jewett Regional Science Education Center. The event, which begins at noon in the science center lobby, will be a Kahoot, or an interactive online quiz. There will be questions about the organization presented, allowing the participants to join in on their phones. The top three people who participate will get a prize. NSU-Primrose Arts and Lecture Series
The 2019-20 NSU-Primrose Arts and Lecture Series will take place Tuesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. throughout the academic year at Aberdeen's Primrose Retirement Community, located at 1701 Third Avenue S.E. Presenters and topics are as follows:
Nov. 12: "Turning Pages, Changing Minds: 10 Years of the NSU Common Read"; presented by Dr. Erin Fouberg, Associate Provost/Professor of Geography.

Student Seminar: ‘Building A Website’
Travis Schaunaman will present at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in JFAC117. His presentation will be on showcasing your business by learning how to build a website. This presentation, which is open to all, is part of a series of “Investing in Yourself Student Seminars” taking place this month, sponsored by PBL/Business Club and the School of Business. Fall 2019 Noon Forums
NSU’s fall 2019 Noon Forums continue on Wednesdays at noon in the NSU Williams Library Round Room. This week’s topic is “White Nationalism on Trial” on Nov. 13, led by the Department of History and Social Sciences. Future topics are:

NSU Japan Outreach Initiative Events
NSU Japan Outreach Initiative Coordinator Kirika Shimmei will hold a series of events this month. On Nov. 13, there will be a Japanese Language Program in the NSU library from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. On Nov. 15, there will be a Movie Night, “A Tale of Samurai Cooking,” in the Student Center Centennial Rooms from 6 to 9 p.m. These events are open to all students, faculty and staff.
NSU Larry and Julie Poeppel Family Common Read Lecture
Author Manoush Zomorodi will discuss “Bored and Brilliant: How Spacing Out Can Unlock Your Most Productive and Creative Self” at the Northern State University Larry and Julie Poeppel Family Common Read Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The lecture is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. Zomorodi will speak for about 50 minutes, take questions from the audience, and then sign copies of her book. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. “Bored and Brilliant” explores the connection between boredom and original thinking and considers how we can harness boredom’s hidden benefits to become our most productive and creative selves without totally abandoning our gadgets in the process. The book is available at the NSU Wolf Shoppe for $12.25. Summer hours for the Wolf Shoppe are: 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed Friday, June 28, for inventory).
Pheasant Sandwich Shootout
Contestants are needed for Aberdeen’s Pheasant Sandwich Shootout on Thursday, Nov. 14! Entries must be a pheasant sandwich, prepared as a modern interpretation on the traditional recipe. This event is free to enter and open to the public, so invite your friends and family to come watch! Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning contestants in each category. For more information or to register, visit 3rd Annual Pheasant Sandwich Shootout online. The deadline to register is 5 p.m. Nov. 11.
‘Fall Into Jazz’ Concert
On Nov. 14, the Northern State University School of Fine Arts invites you to “Fall Into Jazz” at a concert on the NSU campus. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theatre. The event will feature performances by the 2 O’Clock Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Grant Manhart; the 1 O’Clock Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Terry Beckler; and the NSU Jazz Trio and Jazz Combo, both directed by Mr. Fritz Hemke. Tickets cost $5 for adults and $2.50 for NSU faculty and staff. Northern students are admitted for free with ID. Tickets will be available at the door, but are also on sale now through the JFAC box office. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, noon-4 p.m., and two hours before the show begins on performance nights. The JFAC box office phone number is 605-626-2900. Senior Tradition Luncheon
The NSU Foundation and Alumni Association’s Senior Tradition Luncheon, hosted for all graduating seniors, will take place at noon Nov. 20 in Student Center Centennial Rooms C and D. Graduating seniors should plan to attend this event to learn about the Alumni Association they are about to join, how to continue to be a part of NSU and how to stay in touch with fellow alumni! Pack Gives Back
Join us for a morning of serving our local community! On Nov. 16 from 7 a.m. to noon, we will be splitting into groups that will go to the Aberdeen Area Senior Center, Primrose and Bethesda. Students will be engaging in different activities at each of the locations by interacting with and serving the senior citizens in our community. Lunch will be provided at noon at Swisher Field prior to the Northern Football game. Sign-up is required - sign up here!
Northern Night
Northern Night will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Dakota Event Center. This annual gala benefits NSU and its deserving students and all faculty and staff are invited to attend and join in those efforts. Split-Pot Tickets Will Raise Money for Scholarships
Tickets for the $30,000 split-pot are available at the NSU Foundation. Only 300 tickets are being sold. The winner will receive $15,000 and $15,000 will go toward Northern student scholarships. Need not be present to win – the drawing will take place at Northern Night on Nov. 16. To purchase a ticket, contact the Foundation at 605-626-2550.
NSU Bands ‘Explorations’ concert
On Sunday, Nov. 17, the NSU Symphonic and Concert bands will present the first in a series of concerts featuring music from around the world. The “Explorations” concert will begin at 3 p.m. in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theatre. Tickets cost $7 for adults and $3.50 for NSU faculty/staff. Students are admitted free with ID. Tickets can be purchased online or at the JFAC box office. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, noon-4 p.m., and two hours before the show begins. Community Chinese Classes
The NSU Confucius Institute is offering community Chinese courses through Nov. 19. Youth classes take place 3:15-4:15 p.m. Tuesdays, and adult classes take place 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Northern Lights Accepting Submissions
Northern Lights, the campus literary magazine, is accepting submissions and will have a tabling event in the Student Center mall on Nov. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The submissions can be anything from short stories to personal essays to art work. You don't need to be an English or art major/minor to submit work, you just need a passion for creativity. Submissions will be accepted until Dec. 1, and with magazine will be released next semester. To submit work, email northernlights@northern.edu.
AwareWolves Canvas Sip and Paint
AwareWolves will have a canvas Sip and Paint night coming up on Nov. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Student Center Centennial Room. Plan to attend!
Woolever Senior Recital
Jennem Woolever will have her senior recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, in the Krikac Auditorium on campus. Woolever will perform “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Phillip Sousa, “Syrinx” by Claude Debussy, “Cantabile et Presto” by George Enescu, “Concerto in A Minor for Piccolo Movement 1” by Antonio Vivaldi and “The Entertainer” by Scott Joplin. Also performing will be Grace Gasperich.
Moscow Ballet Brings ‘Gift of Christmas Tour’ to NSU this November
Tickets are on sale now for the fourth annual performance of the Great Russian Nutcracker at Northern State University. Moscow Ballet will bring the “Gift of Christmas Tour” to Aberdeen at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater. The performance will bring holiday magic to life, creating unforgettable memories for all ages. Tickets may be purchased online at the NSU Fine Arts Department webpage.
Volunteer Opportunity: Salvation Army
The Salvation Army will be providing a bell-ringing station at the Barnett Center for the Dec. 6-7 home basketball games. They’d like to get NSU students, faculty and staff to volunteer to ring bells. If you are interested, please follow these instructions:

American Indian Circle Program Cultural Education is First Tuesday of the Month
Northern is dedicated to the recognition of tribal traditions and ceremonies that complement the holistic well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native students. The first Tuesday of every month from 12:15-12:30 p.m. we come together in Spafford 106 and have cultural education time to talk about what smudging is, the importance it symbolizes in Indigenous culture and a time of reflection. The American Indian Circle Program would like to invite the NSU campus community to come and participate in our monthly Smudge. Everyone is welcome!
Update from NSU Recreation
Yoga is offered every Tuesday and Thursday in Dacotah Gym lower studio at 5:30 p.m. Taekwondo is offered to students every Wednesday in Dacotah Gym upper studio at 5:30. Zumba is offered every Monday and Wednesday in Dacotah Gym lower studio at 5:30. Open swim hours at the pool in the Barnett Center are noon-1pm Monday through Thursday, 7:30-9 a.m. and 8:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Co-ed volleyball league starts Nov. 10 and will run into December; sign your team up on IMLeagues or email your information to nsuim@northern.edu. Winner of the co-ed volleyball league will receive Northern beanies. E-gaming is also coming up with Fortnite on Nov. 23.
Spring Break Power Outage Planned
There is an essential campus power outage scheduled for the weekend of March 7-8, 2020 (spring break). We ask that you please begin the process of planning for how this outage may affect your individual areas and students. More information on the outage will be shared after the holidays.
Save the Date: Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum
The annual NSU Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2020. All students participating in scholarly activity are invited to participate. Registration details to be announced in January.

- Buy one at regular price, get one free general admission season ticket (soccer, volleyball, football, wrestling, men’s and women’s basketball are all ticketed)

- 50 percent off reserved season tickets (section A only – chair back seats for basketball)
- Regular price: $400
- Faculty/staff price: $200
- You will receive a Wolves Club season ticket book with individual tickets for each game!
- Faculty with children can have adjacent chair back seats (in section A) reserved for their kids upon signing them up for Wolves Buddies - $40 per child, $99 for three or more kids.
