Welcome to the NSU News Update - providing information on events happening on campus or involving NSU students, staff and faculty.

Fall Jazz Concert Nov. 13

Tonight, the NSU School of Fine Arts presents their fall Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater. Ensembles performing include the 2 O’Clock Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Grant Manhart, NSU professor of music; Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Wendy van Gent, NSU associate professor of music; and the NSU Jazz Combo, directed by Mr. Fred Hemke, NSU assistant professor of music. Admission is $5 for adults, $2.50 for NSU faculty/staff, and free for school-aged children or NSU students with ID. For ticket information, please call 605-626-2900. Tickets can be purchased at the Johnson Fine Arts Center Box Office or online via the School of Fine Arts Page (northern.edu/artsnsu). Box office hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, noon-4 p.m. The box office opens two hours before the show begins on performance nights.

No Plastic November

Also, come visit their recycling informational booth at the Women's Basketball Game on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m.!

Feedback on Aberdeen Trails

The Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department and the City of Aberdeen are currently developing an updated bicycle and pedestrian trail master plan and would like your feedback! Trails are an important amenity to our community—please take a few minutes to provide your thoughts via a brief survey. You can also learn more about the project online.

2018 Common Read Lecture is Nov. 14

Angie Thomas, author of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling book “The Hate U Give,” will deliver NSU’s 2018 Common Read Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The event—Northern’s eighth annual Common Read Lecture—is free and open to the public. The award-winning “The Hate U Give” has received starred reviews from eight literary journals and has been optioned by Fox 2000 and Temple Hill Production. Noon Forum

At noon on Wednesday, Nov. 14, the NSU Noon Forum will be “NATO and Recent Conflicts,” presented by Brian Bengs. Noon Forums take place in the Williams Library Rotunda and are open to all who are interested – students, staff and the public. Glow Bowl

Tonemah Concert at NSU

NSU grad Darryl Tonemah is returning to his alma mater to present a free concert in honor of Native American Heritage Month and to celebrate the release of his brand new album “Red Dirt Remarks.” “The Bridges Concert” will be an intimate acoustic performance presented in support of the Native American Student Association, Multicultural Student Affairs and The American Indian Circle Program, as a continued effort to uplift, empower and bridge cultures through his music. The Bridge Concert will take place on Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public.

‘Fantastic Beasts’ Showing at AMC

Campus Activities Board is hosting “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” at the AMC Theater on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. This is a private showing of the movie, and tickets are free! Students must pick up a voucher in the Campus Activities Board Office and show this voucher at the movie to get in. All empty seats will be released at 6:55 p.m. Contact Janie.Borkowski@northern.edu for any questions.

Volunteer Opportunity

Volunteers are needed at the Aberdeen Area Senior Center Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser, set for 8-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Senior Center, 1303 Seventh Ave S.E. Volunteers are needed from 8 to 10 a.m. or 10 a.m. to noon. Duties include:

  • Serve coffee/juice
  • Refill syrup
  • Wipe tables
  • Flip pancakes
  • And of course…clean up!

Band Concert Sunday

Campus Town Hall 

President Downs will host a campus town hall gathering from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in Beulah Williams Library. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend.

This town hall will include an update on:

o   Enrollment

o   Provost transition

o   Board of Regents initiatives

o   Campus projects

o   Time for questions and comments

Art exhibition: ‘LEFTOVERS – PIECING IT TOGETHER’ 

NSU Professor of Art and Department Chair Sara Christensen Blair’s new exhibit “LEFTOVERS – PIECING IT TOGETHER” will be open through Nov. 30 in the JFAC art gallery. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Summer in China Program

The Summer in China 2019 program is still accepting applications until Dec. 1! It is a five-week study abroad experience that is convenient, affordable and fun. To learn more, email confucius@northern.edu.

Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition

The Northern State University School of Fine Arts has announced that it will launch the first annual Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. The music performance competition will be open to juniors and seniors from high schools throughout South Dakota and surrounding states. Generous prizes will be offered for first, second and third place winners in four categories including piano, strings, voice and wind/percussion. Click here to read more information about the competition.

Primrose Arts and Lecture Series

The 2018-19 NSU-Primrose Arts and Lecture Series will take place throughout the academic school year at Aberdeen's Primrose Retirement Community, located at 1701 Third Avenue S.E.

Feb. 12: "Hub City History: Preserving and Presenting the Past in the NSU Archives"; presented by Mr. Robert Russell, director of Beulah Williams Library.

March 12: "Ceramic Form and Fragment: Artwork of Gratia Brown"; presented by Ms. Gratia Brown, Assistant Professor of Art.

April 9: "NSU:  At Home in the World - An Overview of NSU's International Programs"; presented by Dr. Leigh Neys, director of International Programs.
