Welcome to the NSU News Update - providing information on events happening on campus or involving NSU students, staff and faculty.

Holiday Window Decorating

Students: This year, NSU Student Involvement and Leadership wants to create a multicultural holiday season in the Student Center, with windows decorated for different holidays celebrated around the world. Please fill out our online survey to tell us about the holidays you celebrate, and to let us know if you are interested in decorating a window!

Biology and Chemistry Senior Seminar Presentations

Fall 2018 Biology and Chemistry Senior Seminar Presentations continue at 10-10:50 a.m. Tuesdays in MJ 201 with the following topics:

Nov. 20: Riley Frantzen, Josh Coyle, Kyle Yeargain; “Overuse of Antibiotics”

Nov. 27: Tanner Peltier, Hanneke Oosterwegel, Alexis Opitz; “The Importance of Yeast to Regional Brewing”

Art Exhibition Reception 

NSU senior Breanna Marzahn will hold her senior art exhibition reception 7-9 p.m. Nov. 20 in the President’s Gallery in Spafford Hall. Her senior art exhibition will be open through Nov. 30, and will showcase her many paintings.

Great Russian Nutcracker will return to NSU on Nov. 26

The one and only Moscow Ballet Great Russian Nutcracker will return to the Northern State University Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater on Monday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. Click here to read more. Noon Forum

At noon on Wednesday, Nov. 28, the NSU Noon Forum will be “The Last Lecture I’d Ever Give,” presented by Dr. Teresa Stallings. Noon Forums take place in the Williams Library Rotunda and are open to all who are interested – students, staff and the public. Campus Town Hall 

President Downs will host a campus town hall gathering from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in Beulah Williams Library. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend.

This town hall will include an update on:

o   Enrollment

o   Provost transition

o   Board of Regents initiatives

o   Campus projects

                        o   Time for questions and comments

Holiday Choral Concert

NSU Choirs will present their Holiday Choral Concert at First Presbyterian Church at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29. First Presbyterian Church is located at 318 S. Kline St. in Aberdeen.

Art exhibition: ‘LEFTOVERS – PIECING IT TOGETHER’ 

NSU Professor of Art and Department Chair Sara Christensen Blair’s new exhibit “LEFTOVERS – PIECING IT TOGETHER” will be open through Nov. 30 in the JFAC art gallery. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Santaland Diaries

NSU Theater will present "Santaland Diaries" at the One-Legged Pheasant Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. The One-Legged Pheasant is located at 723 S. Main St. Donations will be accepted to support theater scholarships.

No Plastic November

Don't forget to submit your eco-friendly ways on how you are reducing your plastic waste to Instagram for the Environmental Club Contest! Link your photo with #NSUNoPlasticNovember and tag @nsu_environmental_club.

Summer in China Program

The Summer in China 2019 program is still accepting applications until Dec. 1! It is a five-week study abroad experience that is convenient, affordable and fun. To learn more, email confucius@northern.edu.

Holiday Extravaganza Concert

The NSU “Holiday Extravaganza” concert will be Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the JFAC Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater. Several additional activities are also planned for the evening, for which the public will want to arrive early to enjoy. Refreshments and music, courtesy of several NSU student chamber groups, will greet the public throughout the beautiful JFAC lobby prior to the main concert. Participating groups for the concert include the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony, NSU Symphonic Band, NSU Concert Choir and NSU Chamber Choir. Admission is $7 for adults, $3.50 for NSU faculty/staff, and free for school-aged children or NSU students with ID. Purchase tickets online.

Pre-Med Club Blood Drive

The Pre-Med club will be hosting a blood drive on Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Barnett Center upstairs gym. (Note that it is a different location than last year due to the Board of Regents meeting.)  Sign up online or contact George Nora by email at George.nora@northern.edu.

Senior Recital

Annie Woodmansey and Grace Gasperich will hold a senior recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the NSU Krikac Auditorium. Woodmansey, a music education major, is a soprano and plays the flute. Gasperich, a music performance/accounting major, plays the piano and flute.

Feedback on Aberdeen Trails

The Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department and the City of Aberdeen are currently developing an updated bicycle and pedestrian trail master plan and would like your feedback! Trails are an important amenity to our community—please take a few minutes to provide your thoughts via a brief survey. You can also learn more about the project online.

Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition

The Northern State University School of Fine Arts has announced that it will launch the first annual Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. The music performance competition will be open to juniors and seniors from high schools throughout South Dakota and surrounding states. Generous prizes will be offered for first, second and third place winners in four categories including piano, strings, voice and wind/percussion. Click here to read more information about the competition.

Primrose Arts and Lecture Series

The 2018-19 NSU-Primrose Arts and Lecture Series will take place throughout the academic school year at Aberdeen's Primrose Retirement Community, located at 1701 Third Avenue S.E.

Feb. 12: "Hub City History: Preserving and Presenting the Past in the NSU Archives"; presented by Mr. Robert Russell, director of Beulah Williams Library.

March 12: "Ceramic Form and Fragment: Artwork of Gratia Brown"; presented by Ms. Gratia Brown, Assistant Professor of Art.

April 9: "NSU:  At Home in the World - An Overview of NSU's International Programs"; presented by Dr. Leigh Neys, director of International Programs.
