Faculty-Led Study Abroad Opportunities Available
NSU has faculty-led study abroad programs available for students during the upcoming summer semester, including:
Culture and Language in San José Costa Rica, May 8-22, 2019:
- Stay with a Costa Rican family throughout the duration of the program in San José
- Experience Costa Rican tradition first-hand playing Tingo (Bingo)
- Learn popular Costa Rican dances including salsa
- Visit a coffee plantation
- Explore Hereida, Costa Rica
- Travel to the active Irazu Volcano National Park
History and Geography in Cambodia and Thailand, May 24-June 6, 2019:
- Watch the sun rise over Angkor Wat
- Tour the Royal Palace, royal residence to the king of Cambodia
- Visit the Tuol Sleng Prison in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and talk with a survivor of the Khmer Rouge period
- Take a speed boat to the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand, and stop along the way to snorkel and swim
- Hike to the Hmong village in Ayutthaya, Cambodia, with a local guide
- Visit cultural landmarks all around Bangkok
Study Abroad Experience in Spain, May 9- 8, 2019:

Newman Center Events
This week at the Newman Center:

The Summer in China 2019 program is still accepting applications until Dec. 1! It is a five-week study abroad experience that is convenient, affordable and fun. Attend an information session at the Great Plains East conference room on Nov. 5 at 2:30 p.m. or Nov. 8 at 10:30 a.m. to learn more, or email confucius@northern.edu.
The CSE Committee is hosting another Walk and Talk at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 6, and the first Tuesday of every month in the Dacotah Hall Gym. It is a great opportunity to meet the group and discuss issues. There will be a drawing for a gift card in May, and chances come from attending each event. Please bring non-marking shoes and your ID for gym access.
The Environmental Club is hosting a no plastic movement, No Plastic November! Post a picture on Instagram of how you are contributing to the No Plastic movement. Link your photo with #NSUNoPlasticNovember, and tag @nsu_environmental_club. The picture with the most likes by Nov. 30 will win Environmental Club gear and a $25 gift card to the Wolf Shoppe! The contest runs through Nov. 30.
At noon on Wednesday, Nov. 7, the NSU Noon Forum will be "Don’t Get Fooled Again: Humanities and the Real Art of the Deal"; presented by Dr. Liz Sills. Noon Forums take place in the Williams Library Rotunda and are open to all who are interested – students, staff and the public. NSU Wolf Talks Continue Nov. 7
The themes for the fall Wolf Talks series are: community, courage, responsibility and creating change. The schedule appears below:

Wolf Talks, which are free and open to the public, are held in conjunction with the NSU Common Read and are sponsored by TRIO Student Support Services.
Aberdeen Recreational Trails Meeting
Representatives from Aberdeen’s higher education institutions are invited to a meeting about the Aberdeen Recreational Trails Plan 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in the Alumni Room at the Aberdeen Recreation and Cultural Center. Administrators, athletics staff, student-athletes and student leaders, among others, are encouraged to attend and share their thoughts regarding how trails should be developed throughout the community. Also, a community open house will be held 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Eagle’s Nest at the ARCC. To learn more about the trails project, visit: www.aberdeentrailplan.com.
Northern Lights Festival
The “Northern Lights: Celebrating Grieg, Vinje and Krerulf” festival of Norwegian music and poetry will be held Nov. 8-9 at NSU. The schedule is as follows:
- Thursday, Nov. 8: opening concert, 7:30 p.m., Krikac Auditorium
- Friday, Nov. 9: brown bag luncheon and Q&A with the performing artists, noon, Williams Library rotunda; lecture on the life and work of poet Aasmund O. Vinje, 1 p.m., library rotunda; closing concert, 7:30 p.m., Krikac Auditorium
All events are free and open to the public.
NSU Theater Auditions Nov. 9
Auditions for the NSU Theater winter show will be held Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in the JFAC Black Box Theatre. “Silent Sky” includes roles for four women and one man:
- Henrietta Leavitt: brilliant, determined, a dreamer; has never much cared for the "status quo."
- Margaret Leavitt: a homebody, genuine, sweet natured; ability to sing and play the piano a plus.
- Peter Shaw: reserved, his views have never really been challenged prior to the events of this play; handsome but unassuming.
- Annie Cannon: a leader, tough, sure, grows into a firebrand for the suffrage movement.
- Williamina Fleming: Scottish, intelligent, witty, warm and outgoing; the first of her kind.
Please prepare a short monologue, or be prepared to read from the play. Rehearsals will begin in January 2019.

Wage Negotiation - Start Smart Workshop
AAUW is hosting a Start Smart workshop led by Dr. Audrey Miller (certified Start Smart Facilitator). This workshop will give you the skills and confidence to successfully negotiate your salary and benefits. You will also learn how to quantify the market value of your education, skills and experience; how to conduct objective market research and determine a fair target salary; and how to create a strategic pitch and respond to salary offers. 2018 Common Read Lecture is Nov. 14
Angie Thomas, author of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling book “The Hate U Give,” will deliver NSU’s 2018 Common Read Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The event—Northern’s eighth annual Common Read Lecture—is free and open to the public. The award-winning “The Hate U Give” has received starred reviews from eight literary journals and has been optioned by Fox 2000 and Temple Hill Production. ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Showing at AMC
Campus Activities Board is hosting “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” at the AMC Theater on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. This is a private showing of the movie, and tickets are free! Students must pick up a voucher in the Campus Activities Board Office and show this voucher at the movie to get in. Volunteer Opportunity
Volunteers are needed at the Aberdeen Area Senior Center Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser, set for 8-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Senior Center, 1303 Seventh Ave S.E. Volunteers are needed from 8 to 10 a.m. or 10 a.m. to noon. Duties include:
- Serve coffee/juice
- Refill syrup
- Wipe tables
- Flip pancakes
- And of course…clean up!

Art exhibition: ‘LEFTOVERS – PIECING IT TOGETHER’
NSU Professor of Art and Department Chair Sara Christensen Blair’s new exhibit “LEFTOVERS – PIECING IT TOGETHER” will be open through Nov. 30 in the JFAC art gallery. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition
The Northern State University School of Fine Arts has announced that it will launch the first annual Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. The music performance competition will be open to juniors and seniors from high schools throughout South Dakota and surrounding states. Generous prizes will be offered for first, second and third place winners in four categories including piano, strings, voice and wind/percussion.
