On Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Missouri River Room is the second NSU Multicultural Forum. Drs. Andria Moon, Anna Schwan and Courtney Waid-Lindberg will be discussing about their time as an NSU Delegation in Ji'nan, China. There will be free food provided!
Primrose Arts and Lecture Series
The 2018-19 NSU-Primrose Arts and Lecture Series will take place throughout the academic school year at Aberdeen's Primrose Retirement Community, located at 1701 Third Avenue S.E.
Presenters and topics are as follows:
Oct. 9: "From Russia to Aberdeen with Love"; presented by Dr. Elvira Sanatullova-Allison, Dean of Millicent Atkins School of Education.
Nov. 13: "James King, Indian Scout"; presented by Dr. David Grettler, professor of history.
Feb. 12: "Hub City History: Preserving and Presenting the Past in the NSU Archives"; presented by Mr. Robert Russell, director of Beulah Williams Library.
March 12: "Ceramic Form and Fragment: Artwork of Gratia Brown"; presented by Ms. Gratia Brown, Assistant Professor of Art.
April 9: "NSU: At Home in the World - An Overview of NSU's International Programs"; presented by Dr. Leigh Neys, director of International Programs.
Join Your RHA Day
Join Northern’s Residence Hall Association on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Student Center for “Join Your RHA Day.” Representatives of the Residence Hall Association will be giving out sweet treats, promoting their next major event and getting your input on the residence halls. At noon on Wednesday, Oct. 10, the NSU Noon Forum will be "Kung Fu Panda and the Chinese Martial Arts Novel," presented by Professor Liwen Li and the Confucius Center. Noon Forums take place in the Williams Library Rotunda and are open to all who are interested – students, staff and the public. The NSU Study Abroad Fair is set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Student Center Mall. The purpose of the free event is for students to learn more about the more than 100 study abroad programs at Northern. The fair will include study abroad advisors, professors, previous study abroad students and NSU study abroad partners. SDSBVI Groundbreaking Postponed
The date of the groundbreaking ceremony for the new South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired has been changed one week. The public is welcome at the ceremony, which will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the corner of South State Street and 14th Avenue Southeast. A reception will follow across the street in the lobby of the NSU Barnett Center.
An employee from Daktronics will be coming to talk to the NSU Business Club on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Hall 224. The employee is also a Northern alum and will talk about all the opportunities available at the company. The Business Club will be sponsoring the event, but all are welcome! There will be pizza and soda.
Music for Piano Four-Hands Recital
Dr. Kenneth Boulton and JoAnne Barry will present a recital of music for piano four-hands at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in NSU’s Krikac Auditorium. Featured on the program will be music by Emmanuel Chabrier, Florent Schmitt, Edward Elgar and Franz Schubert. The concert is free and open to the public.
SDMTA Competition Preparation Performance
NSU is hosting the local performance of students preparing for South Dakota Music Teachers Association (SDMTA) competitions taking place early November in Brookings, S.D. Four student-pianists from the Aberdeen area are planning to compete, and will perform a portion of their competition repertoire on Oct. 13 in Berggren Recital Hall on the NSU campus, starting at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public at no charge.
Pack Gives Back
Pack Gives Back will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14. Registration will start at 10:30 a.m. in the Student Center. This is a great opportunity to help out many of our community members. Stay after to enjoy some tailgate events prior to attending the soccer game. We are also looking for faculty and staff leaders to assist with the projects. Weisenburger Senior Recital
Brigette Weisenburger will have her senior recital at 2 p.m. Oct. 14 in NSU’s Krikac Auditorium. Weisenburger, who is pursuing a B.A. in music, plays the piano. She will perform “Sonata in A Major, K331” by W.A. Mozart; “Romanian Folk Dances, Sz. 56” by Bela Bartok; and “Lovesong” by Joseph Suk. The recital is free and open to the public.
Biology and Chemistry Senior Seminar Presentations
Fall 2018 Biology and Chemistry Senior Seminar Presentations kick off Oct. 16 at 10-10:50 a.m. with Angela Eliason and Joshua Gold presenting “History and Future Outlook of Prosthetics.”
These presentations will continue on Tuesdays in MJ 201 with the following topics:

NSU students can get FREE flu shots on Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Center Thunder Conference Room 205, sponsored by Aberdeen Area POD and the South Dakota Department of Health. Man of La Mancha
The NSU Theater Department will present the musical "Man of La Mancha" in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater Oct. 17-20 at 7:30 p.m. nightly. Click here for tickets, or click here to read more!
Super Bowl Winner to Visit Campus
Join the Residence Hall Association to welcome NFL Super Bowl winner Jonathan Goff on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. in Berggren Recital Hall in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. Goff will tell his story about the road to the Super Bowl, as well as have memorabilia from his time in the NFL and as a stand-out college football player at Vanderbilt University for attendees to view. Following Goff’s speech, he will answer questions from the audience.
Library Media Literacy Forum
NSU’s Beulah Williams Library will host a forum to discuss how individuals in smaller communities consume news – and how they protect themselves from misinformation. The forum will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in the Williams Library Round Room. The event includes a panel of local communications professionals:

2018 NSU Undergraduate Competitive Research Grants
Eligible undergraduate students are welcome to submit a proposal for a grant of up to $2,500 in support of an independent research project. Proposals for Calendar Year 2019 (Cycle 2) are due Monday, Oct. 29, 2018. Research Project Advisor approval is required for grant-funded research conducted during the summer. Chinese Brush Painting Workshops
Chinese brush painting workshops will be held Tuesdays at 1 p.m. in the Student Center through Oct 30. The workshops are free to NSU students, faculty and staff. All levels are welcome.
NSU Culturefest is Nov. 1
Organizers of Culturefest are seeking entertainment and community groups to participate in the event this fall on the Northern campus. Culturefest, a celebration of cultures from around the nation and the world, will be held 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Barnett Center. Culturefest is free and open to the public. Individuals or groups interested in participating are encouraged to contact the NSU Office of International Programs at 605-626-7802 or international@northern.edu.
NSU Wolf Talks Continue Nov. 7
The themes for the fall Wolf Talks series are: community, courage, responsibility and creating change. The schedule appears below:

Wolf Talks, which are free and open to the public, are held in conjunction with the NSU Common Read and are sponsored by TRIO Student Support Services.
2018 Common Read Lecture is Nov. 14
Angie Thomas, author of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling book “The Hate U Give,” will deliver NSU’s 2018 Common Read Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The event—Northern’s eighth annual Common Read Lecture—is free and open to the public. The award-winning “The Hate U Give” has received starred reviews from eight literary journals and has been optioned by Fox 2000 and Temple Hill Production. Great Russian Nutcracker will return to NSU on Nov. 26
The one and only Moscow Ballet Great Russian Nutcracker will return to the Northern State University Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater on Monday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition
The Northern State University School of Fine Arts has announced that it will launch the first annual Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. The music performance competition will be open to juniors and seniors from high schools throughout South Dakota and surrounding states. Generous prizes will be offered for first, second and third place winners in four categories including piano, strings, voice and wind/percussion. May Overby Elementary School is looking for afternoon crossing guards! Typically, a shift runs from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. Contact Mike.Neubert@k12.sd.us if interested. This school is seeing an increase in traffic due to NSU construction projects.
