POSTED MARCH 17, 2020 - INFORMATION MAY HAVE CHANGED

From the Office of Residence Life

With the decision of the South Dakota BOR to move all classes to on-line instruction through April 5 and to resume in-person classes on April 6, I am sure all of you have questions for what this means for you.

Based on recommendations from federal, state and local governments I would encourage all students to stay in their primary place of residence, during this period of time.

However, we know that many members of our residential community will not be able to return to their primary homes for a variety of reasons.  And we assure you that we will continue to provide on-campus residency for all students who need it.

It is important to stress that Northern State residence halls are not closing, and it is not necessary for students to permanently move out of the halls at this time.  But we do need to know your plans during this time, so we’re asking each of you to complete a new quick survey so we can best serve everyone.

Below is some important information and tips to assist you over the next few days.

  • All students are strongly encouraged to return to their primary place of residence, or stay at their primary place of residence, if currently there for spring break.
  • If you need to return briefly to your on-campus residential space for materials, please make note of the following as you pack:
  • Take all academic-related materials with you, including books, laptops, chargers, and other related materials;
  • Take all medication, valuables, and clothing required for an extended period of time away from campus;
  • Take all important documents, including passports, driver’s license, credit cards, etc.
  • Residence halls will remain open for those who are unable to return to their primary place of residence.
  • If you remain on campus, please be aware that essential services and emergency response will be the university priority. We appreciate your patience if you experience increased wait times for routine communications and work orders, and reduced hours and services at the residence hall offices.
  • Student support staff will be available to students, including our Campus Police Officer, Campus Health Services, Campus Counseling Services, Student Affairs, and Campus Facilities.
  • Off-campus guests are not permitted at this time on the Northern campus.  Should that change all students will be notified.
  • Dining Services will continue to provide meals for our residential students.  Hours for the Wolves Den, Einstein’s and the POD Market are posted throughout each residence hall and in the Student Center.

Thank you for your understanding and assistance as we continue to work through this situation.
