Student sitting on Barnett Center sign

"As the Thanksgiving season is upon us, the inevitable question of 'What are you thankful for?' is a common topic of conversation. There are the usual answers of friends and family. I’m thankful for those too. I’m grateful to have many amazing people that I call friends who are scattered across the globe. Some of these people I’ve known my whole life since I’ve grown up a few blocks away from them, and some of these people I’ve only recently met at Northern but make me feel like I’ve known them my whole life. I also have the most wonderful, supportive and interesting family. They have always encouraged me to do what interests me. When I got to college, that included traveling across the globe. This summer I went to Cambodia and Thailand on a history and geography trip with two of my favorite professors. It was the first time I’d ever flown to a different continent, but my family was so excited for me to experience another part of the world. Another thing that I’m very thankful for is the ability to study abroad through Northern. As an international business major, I seek out these different experiences. Cambodia and Thailand was my first adventure, and over spring break I’ll be headed to Guatemala to help build a bottle school on a service learning trip. For fall 2020, I’ll be heading to Jyväskylä, Finland, to study for a semester. One of the ways that this was possible was through the various scholarships Northern offers. I’ve been able to save and go see the world while still in college. I’m grateful for the generous donors who believe in Northern students and want to help us fund our education. Lastly, I’m thankful that the world is so interconnected and filled with people I’m excited to meet."  - Morgie Binfet
