- The South Dakota Department of Health defines close contact as:
- Spending prolonged periods in the same room. For COVID-19, a prolonged period for close contact is defined as being within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes starting from 48 hours before the person began feeling sick until the time the patient was isolated.
- Direct physical contact – kissing, hugging
- Shared eating or drinking utensils
- Contact with respiratory secretions (cough, sneeze on you)

- Employees who are well but who have a family member they live with and have had close contact with who has COVID-19 should notify their supervisor. The supervisor and Human Resources will determine the course of action to follow, which may include but is not limited to: working remotely, self-quarantining, and self-monitoring.
