The instrumental emphasis is for you if you’d like to teach K-12 instrumental music and supervise school music programs. You’ll be encouraged to take vocal courses to strengthen your musicianship.
Our Master's in Music Education program offers a flexible way to complete your advanced degree in two years while you retain your current job. You'll be stimulated, challenged, and ready to move forward in the classroom and your career. The online program is practice-oriented and covers the essentials of research in music education, music theory, performance practices, conducting, pedagogy, and music education management. Courses are taught by highly qualified faculty with years of successful classroom experience.
Northern's Certificate in Organismal Biology, a branch of biology that's concerned with all aspects of the life of organisms, will enhance and broaden your education in the sciences.
As a student in our B.S.Ed. Physical Education program, you’ll learn scientific and fitness principles, pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching), and curriculum development from our diverse and experienced faculty.
Coursework within the major falls into three categories:

Physical education methodology courses train prospective teachers to promote physical literacy and are specific to the gymnasium.
Northern’s Piano Pedagogy Certificate provides music students the necessary knowledge to establish an independent piano studio or gain employment in a community music school setting. With this certificate, you will gain the skills to provide proficient instruction as a piano teacher to students of all ages and levels; utilize a variety of foremost piano methods and teaching approaches; cultivate facility in piano technique; and interact musically and professionally with teacher organizations at the local, state, and national levels.
With a career in athletic training, you’ll help athletes achieve their maximum potential in health and performance. While pre-athletic training is not a major itself, we’ll match you with a degree program and the necessary coursework required to prepare you for admission into a school of athletic training.
