Screening of ‘13th’ set for Feb. 27

ABERDEEN, S.D. – In honor of Black History Month, a screening and discussion of Ava DuVernay’s documentary “13th” will be held on the Northern State University campus.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Red Room (JC117).

DuVernay’s film explores the history of racial inequality in the United States. The event, which is co-sponsored by NSU Jump Start and the NSU Honors Program, is free and open to the public.

Northern State University Bands to present Jazz Spectacular

 ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University music department will present their annual Jazz Spectacular at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Main Theater, featuring NSU students and faculty.

The student-led jazz-fusion band, “Jet Lagged,” will kick off the evening’s festivities. “Jet Lagged” is led by NSU student percussionist, Paulo Jimenez. The group will showcase their music with guest performer and NSU music faculty member, Dr. Fred Hemke.

NSU Chinese Cultural Center to hold grand opening

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University will host a grand opening of the Confucius Institute’s Chinese Cultural Center on Thursday, Feb. 23, featuring a demonstration by a renowned Chinese paper-cutting artist.

The grand opening begins at 6 p.m. in NSU’s Williams Library. Speakers will include Dr. Greg DePies, interim director of the NSU Confucius Institute; Dr. Timothy Downs, NSU president; and Dr. Alan LaFave, NSU provost and vice president for academic affairs.

AUCS to present romantic concert to warm a winter’s night

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony will present its winter concert, “Romantic Genius,” in the main theater of the Johnson Fine Arts Center on Feb. 25, 2017, at 7:30 p.m.

The program will feature the Symphony in D Minor by Robert Schumann and the winners of the 2016 NSU Concerto/Aria Competition. There will be a pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m. in the Blue Room with guest speaker Dr. Jean Marie Hellner.

Gratia Brown’s ‘Recontextualize’ exhibition to be displayed through March 31

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University art department faculty member, Gratia Brown’s art exhibition entitled “Recontextualize” will be displayed in the Northern State University Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery.

Brown’s exhibition will be showcased through March 31. An opening reception for the event will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, in the JFAC Gallery.

Bergjord, Ries to hold senior recital on Oct. 30

ABERDEEN, S.D.- Luke Bergjord and Nicholas Ries will have a senior recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, in Northern State University’s Johnson Fine Arts Center Main Theatre.
 
Bergjord, the son of Dave and Mary Bergjord, grew up in Aberdeen, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School in 2012.
 
Ries, the son of Mark and Ann Ries, grew up in Goodwin, graduating from Watertown High School in 2013.
 

2016 Concerto-Aria Competition set for Nov. 3 at Northern State University

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony will present the 2016 Concerto-Aria Competition at 6 p.m. Nov. 3 in Krikac Auditorium on the Northern State University campus.

Winners of the competition will perform with the orchestra at its concert on Feb. 25, 2017. This year, there will be 12 vocal competitors and eight instrumental competitors:
