Two NSU Students Win Concerto-Aria Competition 2018

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Two Northern State University students won this year’s Concerto-Aria Competition.

Held on Nov. 17, the competition is a project of the Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony in which vocal competitors must perform arias from operas. Instrumental competitors perform classical, romantic, impressionist and modern compositions, including works for soloist and orchestra.

An outside panel of three judges had to decide among 24 talented participants, but concluded on their two winners:

Holmgren senior art exhibition to be displayed in the NSU Isaac Lincoln Gallery

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Jarrod Holmgren’s senior art exhibition will be on display in the Northern State University Isaac Lincoln Gallery Dec. 3-14.

A reception for the exhibition will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in the Isaac Lincoln Gallery.

Holmgren grew up in Clara City, Minn., graduating from Maccray High School in 2011. He is the son of Cary and Becky Holmgren of Clara City, Minn.

Displayed art in the exhibition includes photography and digital imaging.

Northern to offer BFA in studio art, digital media

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Starting in January, Northern State University will offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Media.

The degrees were approved by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, making Northern one of only two universities in the state accredited to offer these degrees.

The accreditation means Northern has faculty at the Ph.D. level in the area of art history and criticism, which not many schools have, said NSU Art Department Chair Sara Christensen Blair.

Gasperich, Woodmansey to hold senior recital on December 5

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Grace Gasperich and Annie Woodmansey will hold a senior recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Northern State University Krikac Auditorium.

Gasperich, the daughter of Matthew and Kristen Gasperich of Aberdeen, graduated from Central High School in 2015.

Woodmansey, the daughter of Kent and Susan Woodmansey of Pierre, graduated from T.F. Riggs High School in 2015.

NSU Choirs to hold Holiday Concert on Nov. 29

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University choirs will come together to celebrate the holiday season, offering their annual holiday choral concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29 at First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen.

The NSU Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Early Musick Ensemble will join forces to perform multicultural works, primarily performed by the Concert Choir, alongside many holiday works.

NSU Theater to present ‘Santaland Diaries’ at One-Legged Pheasant Brewery

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Theater’s upcoming production of "The Santaland Diaries" will be performed downtown at the One-Legged Pheasant Brewery.

"The Santaland Diaries" by David Sedaris, adapted by Joe Mantello, is a one-man show following the adventures of an out-of-work writer who takes a job as an elf in Macy's Santaland. His adventures are outlined in comic detail in this production. 

NSU Jazz Bands to host Fall Jazz Concert on Nov. 13

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University School of Fine Arts will present their fall Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater.

Ensembles performing on the concert include the 2 O’Clock Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Grant Manhart, NSU professor of music; Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Wendy van Gent, NSU associate professor of music; and the NSU Jazz Combo, directed by Mr. Fred Hemke, NSU assistant professor of music.
