Ribbon-cutting ceremony set for NSU Jewett Regional Science Education Center

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University is planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate its first new academic building in more than 40 years.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Harvey C. Jewett IV Regional Science Education Center will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, with the ceremony beginning at 3:30 p.m. The event will take place outside the building, which serves as a new gateway to campus at the corner of Twelfth Avenue Southeast and South State Street.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Shawna Malsom has always known she wanted to be a nurse, advocating for patients on their best days and their toughest days.

BOR approves NSU academic requests

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Board of Regents this week approved academic program requests from public universities, including Northern State University, to meet workforce and community development needs across the state.  

For Northern, requests were approved for new undergraduate certificates in behavioral forensic sciences and quantitative analytics in science and a graduate certificate in Germans from Russia studies. 

NSU’s Schaff to publish book, ‘Abraham Lincoln’s Statesmanship and the Limits of Liberal Democracy’

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Political Science Professor Dr. Jon Schaff is releasing a book examining the Lincoln presidency and democracy in the United States.

“Abraham Lincoln’s Statesmanship and the Limits of Liberal Democracy” will be published by Southern Illinois University Press. It is available for purchase at the SIU website and also on Amazon.

NSU’s 10th annual Common Read Lecture set for Nov. 13

ABERDEEN, S.D. – An award-winning author whose book explores the hidden benefits of boredom will deliver the Northern State University Larry and Julie Poeppel Family Common Read Lecture this fall.

Author Manoush Zomorodi will discuss “Bored and Brilliant: How Spacing Out Can Unlock Your Most Productive and Creative Self” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Johnson Fine Arts Center.

ShyAnn Springer receives SR Education Group scholarship for study abroad

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University College of Arts and Sciences student ShyAnn Springer recently received a $5,000 scholarship from the SR Education Group to study abroad in Japan.

Springer is a junior English major with an emphasis in TESOL from Bradley, S.D.

To receive this scholarship, Springer answered two open-ended, personal questions that were evaluated by a panel of judges. Students who wrote the most persuasive, compelling, and well-written arguments were considered finalists.
