NSU to host 35th annual Science and Math Fair

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University will hold the 35th annual Northern South Dakota Science and Mathematics Fair on Thursday, March 22.

Approximately 60 judges from surrounding areas will be judging the projects of high school juniors and seniors from 20 surrounding schools in the area and interviewing these students.

The students involved come from Brown, Campbell, Day, Edmunds, Faulk, Hyde, Marshall, McPherson, Roberts, Spink and Walworth counties.

Northern State University to host National History Day on March 14

ABERDEEN, S.D. – More than 100 middle and high school students from northeastern South Dakota will be on the Northern State University campus on March 14 for the National History Day regional competition.

More than 100 students from eight schools will present research projects as part of the competition, which will run from 8 a.m. to noon in the NSU Student Center and Missouri River Room.

This year’s theme is “Conflict and Compromise in History.” Nationwide, more than a half million kids participate in National History Day every year.

NSU College of Arts and Sciences’ North to present research in Pierre on Feb. 26

ABERDEEN, S.D. -  Northern State University senior Zack North of Huron will present research at the State Capitol in Pierre on Feb. 26.

North was chosen to represent Northern State University and will present his own research project, titled “Public History in Action: Preserving the Story of NSU Fine Arts,” to the greater legislative community.

North is one of twelve students recognized as outstanding undergraduate student researchers who will present at the Capitol on Feb. 26.

Northern State University to participate in Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s SEA-PHAGES program

ABERDEEN, S.D. -  Northern State University has received the distinction of participating in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science Education Alliance’s Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program beginning in the fall.

This amazing opportunity will allow NSU science students to get involved in real-world research during their early semesters and participate in the science field on a national scale.

NSU students take field trip to Minnesota mosque

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Thirteen Northern State University students deepened their understanding of Islam this semester thanks to a field trip to a Minnesota mosque.

Students in the course “History and Geography of the Middle East,” co-taught by Drs. Erin Fouberg and Steven Usitalo, traveled to the Abu Bakar Islamic Center in Minneapolis in November. The field trip, which also included a stop at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, gave the students a unique experience they couldn’t get in the classroom, Fouberg said.

NSU Honors Student receives award at National Collegiate Honors Conference

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Honors Student Whitney Berner won the Education and Pedagogy Division of the student poster competition at the National Collegiate Honors Conference this month.

Berner’s project, “Effects of Classroom Environment on Math Anxiety among Elementary Education Majors,” studied the correlation between math anxiety and classroom environment in math concepts/math methods classes for elementary education majors.
