NSU student wins grant to attend Botanical Society of America conference

ABERDEEN, S.D. – A Northern State University student with a passion for plants has been awarded a grant to travel to the national Botanical Society of America meeting this summer.

Sienna Wessel will attend the Botany 2017 conference in Fort Worth, Texas, June 24-28, which will include field trips to study local flora, symposia about cutting-edge research techniques and professional skill workshops. As a recipient of the PLANTS travel grant, Wessel will also receive an individual mentor who shares similar career goals.

NSU to hold annual plant sale in greenhouse

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University will hold a spring plant sale 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, and Thursday, April 27, in the NSU greenhouse.

A variety of plants will be available, including geranium planters, King Tut Papyrus, maternity plants, Cuban oregano and many other living gems.

NSU Undergraduate Creativity, Scholarship and Research Forum Results

ABERDEEN, S.D. -  Several Northern State University students received honors at the 2017 NSU Undergraduate Creativity, Scholarship and Research Forum on April 13.

Oral Presentation Winners:

Stephanie Anderson of Yankton and Amy Wockenfuss of Anchorage, Alaska, received first place with their presentation on “Effects of Permethrin on Xenopus laevis Tadpoles,” with Dr. Alyssa Anderson as their mentor.

NSU Undergraduate Creativity, Scholarship and Research Forum is Thursday

Creativity and Research Forum

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The 2017 Northern State University Undergraduate Creativity, Scholarship and Research Forum will take place 11 a.m.-4:15 p.m. Thursday, April 13, in the Beulah Williams Library.

The forum is a venue in which Northern undergraduates can present their research or scholarly activities. This year, nine students will give oral presentations and seven will give poster presentations.

The schedule is as follows:

NSU students present at South Dakota Academy of Science meeting

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Four Northern State University students presented at the annual South Dakota Academy of Science meeting at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell on March 31 and April 1.

Joseph Keryakos of Jezzine, Lebanon, received a second place award for his poster presentation titled “Genes and health and their linkage to tooth decay and cavities.” Keryakos was mentored by Dr. Alyssa Kiesow.

Higdon and Sigurdson win awards at National Speech and Debate Tournament

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Two Northern State University Speech and Debate team members received awards at the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament in Boise, Idaho.

NSU students Hannah Higdon of Dupree and Jacob Sigurdson of Clear Lake, sophomores, were semifinalists in the nation in Junior Parliamentary Debate. Both students received the prestigious Excellence in Speaking Award.

Sixth-grader Owen Fink wins 2017 South Dakota National Geographic State Bee

ABERDEEN, S.D. Owen Fink, a sixth-grader from Bridgewater-Emery School, took top honors at the 2017 South Dakota National Geographic Bee held today at Northern State University in Aberdeen. This is Owen’s second year as state champion.

The state champion will receive $100, the National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World, 4th Edition and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent South Dakota in the National Geographic Bee Championship to be held at National Geographic Society headquarters, May 14-17, 2017. 

Area high school students win at Science and Mathematics Fair

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Local high school students from Aberdeen and the surrounding region competed in the Northern South Dakota Science and Mathematics Fair on March 23 at Northern State University.

Jake Flakus of Aberdeen Central High School was the individual grand winner with his project titled “Comparing Ethanol Yield from Saccharomyces cerevisiae in Healthy and Decaying Starch and Sugar Solutions.”
