  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – As part of a strategic expansion of staffing and roles within the Northern State University Foundation, Jon Olson has been promoted to senior vice president of development.

    Olson joined the Northern State team in July 2014 as the vice president of development in the NSU Foundation. Olson's primary responsibilities are major gift development and oversight of alumni relations and research staff.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University School of Fine Arts student Elsa Swanson of Chaska, Minn., was chosen as a district winner of the 54th annual North Dakota-Manitoba District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, held Oct. 28 at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

    Swanson, a senior music education major, is a soprano. She has studied under Dr. Darci Bultema, NSU associate professor of voice, during her time at NSU.

  • With a rich history of community outreach on campus dating back to 1962, the Northern State University School of Education Reading Clinic is doing amazing things in Aberdeen, giving children in grades 1-12 access to tutoring and learning opportunities to develop and further spelling and literacy skills.

     The Reading Clinic is also making great strides for NSU School of Education students, giving elementary and special education majors access to unprecedented hands-on experience and guidance to help further their instruction and teaching skills by helping drive the clinic.… more

  • Northern State University alum Dr. Michael Dixon is in the business of getting research and technological discoveries from the lab to the marketplace, where they have major benefits to public health.

    Dixon is president and CEO of UNeMed Corp., which works with faculty, students and staff of the University of Nebraska Medical Center to help commercialize innovative ideas.

    “One way we describe ourselves is: we’re the people between the lab coats and the suit coats,” said Dixon, who was in Aberdeen this fall as a keynote speaker for the Create ‘N’ Festival.

  • When people think of major financial careers, they usually think of Wall Street – but one Northern State University graduate landed this type of job opportunity a lot closer to home.

    Makenzie (Zomers) Smook works for the South Dakota Investment Council in Sioux Falls – a job that first started through an internship while she was a Northern student.

    “It’s very challenging,” said Smook, an Aberdeen native who graduated from NSU in December 2015 with degrees in finance and marketing. “Every day you learn something new.”

  • When Annika van Oosbree came across an online fundraising site for a child with pediatric leukemia, it drove home the importance of her summer internship.

    “I just started crying,” said van Oosbree, a senior honors student at Northern State University. “These are kids who are actually affected by what I’m doing. … I don’t even have my B.S. yet, and I’m making some small dent in this huge problem for kids.”

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Honors Student Whitney Berner won the Education and Pedagogy Division of the student poster competition at the National Collegiate Honors Conference this month.

    Berner’s project, “Effects of Classroom Environment on Math Anxiety among Elementary Education Majors,” studied the correlation between math anxiety and classroom environment in math concepts/math methods classes for elementary education majors.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The opening reception for Michaela Schlecht’s senior art exhibition will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in Northern State University’s Beulah Williams Library.

    Schlecht’s exhibition will be on display Dec. 1-16. It includes photographs, digital art, cyanotypes and video.

    Schlecht, the daughter of Morgan and Valerie Schlecht, grew up in Watertown, graduating from Great Plains Lutheran High School in 2013.

    The WolfPACT is the largest guaranteed, four-year scholarship in South Dakota. Students entering their freshman year at NSU are eligible for various funding amounts based on their ACT scores.
