How do I become a Cooperating Teacher?

What are the requirements to be a cooperating teacher?

Typically at least 3 years of teaching experience, with 1+ years experience in the school, content area, and/or grade. Serving as a cooperating teacher does require your building administrator's approval.

If I complete the Cooperating Teacher Network Interest & Availability Form, am I guaranteed to be assigned candidates for field experiences?

No. At the start of each term, a list of all teachers who submitted the form will be sent to the relevant school adminstrators for review and approval. Then, placement slots will be created based on cooperating teacher availability and the Director of Professional Preparation will match students to slots and cooperating teachers.

Are cooperating teacher requirements different for early field experiences vs. student teaching?

Yes. Short observation experiences (e.g., PAFE/PSTE I) have more flexibility. Full student teaching requires stronger experience and mentorship capacity. All placements require administrator approval.

Are Cooperating Teachers (CTs) paid for hosting candidates in field experiences?

It depends on the experience. CTs are not paid for hosting students in the 2-day, observation-only Pre-Admission Field Experience. CTs are paid a stipend for hosting students in other experiences; stipend amounts depend upon the type and length of the each experience. Exceptions where CTs may not be paid include mentor teachers for candidates serving as "teacher of record" under an Advanced Student Teaching Permit and certain instances where candidates are already employed by the school district, such as some apprenticeship pathways. CTs will be informed of the stipend amount(s) during the placement and confirmation process.

When and how are Cooperating Teachers (CTs) paid for hosting candidates in field experiences?

CTs are paid at the end of the term through their school or district payroll, unless otherwise arranged.
