Check COVID-19 Webpages for Updates

For up-to-date information on the COVID-19 virus, as well as resources and information on Northern’s transition to online learning, please visit the NSU COVID-19 Resource Page or NSU COVID-19 Continuity Page.

Faculty Connect D2L

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is excited to support NSU faculty through the Faculty Connect D2L course sandbox. Faculty Connect is a D2L sandbox shell dedicated to providing a place where NSU faculty can engage in collegial conversations, share resources and provide/receive support as they navigate the new semester situation of teaching remotely in the online medium. You can find the sandbox by searching for “Faculty Connect” under “View all Courses” on your D2L homepage, or in the nine-square waffle at the top center of your D2L screen.

Counseling Program Zoom Discussions

During this time of uncertainty and transition, the NSU Counseling Program plans to host discussions in the coming weeks to help us support each other and our students through the remainder of the semester. Specific topics will be announced at a later time and will rotate by the week, but they are the same for both times on any given Thursday. Please join one of our sessions via these links:

Research with a Librarian

The library is hosting a Research with a Librarian event via Zoom on Thursday, April 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. The event is come and go, where librarians will be available to help students with all aspects of the research process – from focusing their topic, to conducting research, and even helping to correctly format citations.  Join the library at this Zoom link.

Online Tutoring Sessions Available

With Northern’s transition to online learning due to the COVID-19 virus, the NSU Tutoring Center is now offering online tutoring sessions for NSU students. Tutoring is available to any Northern student free of charge for all general education classes and most upper-level classes. The sessions are conducted through Zoom videoconferencing, which allows real-time interaction between students and tutors. For more information or to set up an online tutoring session, students can email nsututoringcenter@northern.edu

Undergraduate Research Updates

Applications are still being accepted for both the Undergraduate Competitive Research Grant and the Northern Edge Award. To allow students extra time to submit their proposals amid the ongoing pandemic, we are extending the deadline to April 7. If you are mentoring any students who plan to apply for these awards, please let them know of the extension and the new submission deadline. For the Undergraduate Competitive Research Grant, students can receive up to $2,500 toward their independent research project. The Northern Edge Award is a new funding opportunity designed to augment existing funding sources for undergraduate scholarship. For questions, contact Undergraduate Research Coordinator Andrew Russell.

Undergraduate Forum Canceled

In light of the campus closure for the remainder of the semester, this year’s Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum scheduled for April 22 has been canceled. Thank you to all who helped plan this year’s event and prepare student presentations. We hope to see you participate in next year’s forum, which is scheduled for Wednesday, April 21, 2021.

Recycling Program Suspended

The recycling program on campus has been suspended until further notice to protect the health of the workers who rinse the bottles.

Library Book Drop

The library wants you to know that even though the building is closed, you can still return your books! There is a book drop (book depository) located in the library’s outer lobby. To keep handling to a minimum, all items will be returned in the library system by staff once-per-week. If you are off campus and need to return your books, you can mail them to:

Beulah Williams Library

NSU

1200 S Jay Street

Aberdeen, SD 57401-7198

Any new library fines that might accrue during COVID-19 closure will be waived. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the library at reference@northern.edu.

Password Expiration Reminders

NSU Net Services is implementing password expiration reminders. Beginning four days prior to your password expiration date (which happens every six months), you will receive a daily email with instructions on how to change your password. You must be registered with Northern’s self-service password reset service in order to reset your password without contacting the Support Desk. If you are not registered, and your password expires after Support Desk hours, you may lose access to many services including D2L, Banner, Zoom, Microsoft O365, Library databases and campus WiFi until the next business day. If you have not registered for the self-service password reset service, please visit the Password Reset Page and select the Register or Change Info option.
