Faculty Award Nominations Due TODAY
Nominations for both faculty awards are due by 5 p.m. today, Monday, March 30, 2020. Northern State University is committed to excellence in teaching and learning. We extended the deadline to submit nominations, hoping you take some time in the next few days to celebrate and honor our faculty with a letter of nomination. To recognize our faculty’s commitment to excellence, we are pleased to announce nominations are open for two outstanding faculty awards:
- NSU Foundation Faculty Excellence Award
- NSU Outstanding Early Career Faculty Award
We invite you to nominate faculty members for these awards. Nominations are welcome from any member of the Northern State University community, and letters may be written by an individual person or a group of individuals. Nominations from students are always welcome. All nominations are due by 5 PM (CDT) Monday, March 30, 2020.
To nominate a Northern State University full-time teaching faculty member for the NSU Foundation Faculty Excellence Award or the NSU Outstanding Early Career Faculty Award, please send a compelling letter of nomination to Judy Lapka in Academic Affairs (judy.lapka@northern.edu).
- In the letter, please indicate the specific award for which you are nominating the person and the specific reasons for the nomination.
- Please save the file name in this format:
Award[Excellence or EarlyCareer]_FacultlastnameFacultyfirstname_Nominatorlastname
For example, a nomination for faculty member Katherine Watson for the NSU Foundation Faculty Excellence award written by nominator John Keating would be: Excellence_WatsonKatherine_Keating
- Email the nomination letter as a file attachment (PDF or Word) to Judy Lapka (judy.lapka@northern.edu).
- Nominations must be received from the Northern State University email address of the nominator. Nominations from email addresses other than the nominator’s will not be accepted.
- The deadline for the receipt of nomination letters for both awards is 5:00 PM (CDT) Monday, March 30, 2020.
Award Criteria:
The NSU Foundation Faculty Excellence Award recognizes faculty for excellence in teaching and learning, a sustained commitment to faculty service, and achievements in research and creativity within their discipline.
- Nominees may be at the rank of professor, associate professor, instructor, or lecturer and must have served a minimum of six (6) years as a member of the Northern State University teaching faculty. Someone who is in their seventh (7th) year is eligible; someone who has completed fewer than six (6) years of teaching service at Northern is not.
- Nominees must have a stellar record of teaching and advising, must have been significantly and consistently involved in a variety of service roles through department, college/school, university, and/or community service activities; and need to be meaningfully engaged in research and creativity in their discipline.
- Any full-time faculty member who has not received this award (or the formerly named outstanding faculty member award) previously and who meets the number of years of service requirement is eligible for this award.
- In addition to a monetary award ($1,000), the recipient receives a commemorative award from the NSU Foundation.
- Current NSU faculty who already won the Outstanding Faculty Member award (see list below) are not eligible to win the NSU Foundation Faculty Excellence Award.
The NSU Outstanding Early Career Faculty Award is presented to an early career full-time faculty member who demonstrates a strong record and commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service.
- Nominees must be at the rank of assistant professor, associate professor, instructor, or lecturer who has between two and six (2 and 6) years of full-time teaching service at Northern State University. Someone who is in their sixth year is eligible; someone who has already completed six years of service is not. Please make sure the individual you are nominating for the NSU Outstanding Early Career Faculty Award is eligible.
- Nominees must have a strong record of teaching and advising, begun contributing to the research and creative activity in their discipline, and will have demonstrated a commitment to service in the department, college/school, or university.
- In addition to the monetary award ($1,000), the recipient receives 2 Wolves Club tickets to NSU athletic events for the next academic year (Wolves Club tickets cannot be resold and are not transferrable).
Selection Process:
A committee of 9, including: four (4) deans (or their designees), the three (3) most recent NSU Foundation Faculty Excellence Award winners (or Outstanding Faculty Member award winners) who are still actively teaching at Northern State University, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, will review all nominations and select the recipients of both awards as a committee.
Winners of both awards will be recognized at the Northern State University spring commencement. By tradition, the winner of the NSU Foundation Faculty Excellence Award will deliver the commencement address at the Northern State University winter commencement. The winner of the NSU Outstanding Early Career Faculty Award will deliver the Wolf Talk during new student orientation in August. If either recipient is not available to deliver said address, the other recipient will be invited to do so.

Post Office, Wolf Shoppe Hours in April
Starting April 7, these will be the posted hours for the next two weeks:
Post Office:
- April 7-April 9: 9-11:30 a.m.
- April 10: Closed
- April 13: Closed
- April 14-April 17: 9-11:30 a.m.
Wolf Shoppe:
- Beginning April 7, closed until further notice to in-store traffic.
- Web orders will be processed daily.
- Freight will be accepted daily from carriers and routed to post office or campus truck for delivery.
SBAC Zoom Hearings
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, hearings for SBAC have been moved to April 20-21 from 5 to 9 p.m., via Zoom. Any organizations or groups that are interested in receiving a Budget Request form or have any questions can contact SGA President Harrison Bruns, Vice President Patrick Minihan or CFO Molly Kueter. Request forms, other additional forms needed for presenting, and sign-ups for hearings are due by Thursday, April 9, before an organization plans on presenting.
TRIO Success Series Online Workshop – Posting Effective and Appropriate Online Videos
NSU’s TRIO Student Support Services program offers workshops throughout the semester that are open to all NSU students. Gain confidence in posting online videos and engaging in online discussion by viewing this video hosted by NSU’s English and Reading Instructor, Erica Bobby.
Recycling Program Suspended
The recycling program on campus has been suspended until further notice to protect the health of the workers who rinse the bottles.
Library Book Drop
The library wants you to know that even though the building is closed, you can still return your books! There is a book drop (book depository) located in the library’s outer lobby. To keep handling to a minimum, all items will be returned in the library system by staff once-per-week. If you are off campus and need to return your books, you can mail them to:

Undergraduate Research Updates
Applications are still being accepted for both the Undergraduate Competitive Research Grant and the Northern Edge Award. To allow students extra time to submit their proposals amid the ongoing pandemic, we are extending the deadline to April 7. If you are mentoring any students who plan to apply for these awards, please let them know of the extension and the new submission deadline. For the Undergraduate Competitive Research Grant, students can receive up to $2,500 toward their independent research project. The Northern Edge Award is a new funding opportunity designed to augment existing funding sources for undergraduate scholarship. For questions, contact Undergraduate Research Coordinator Andrew Russell.
Virtual Events for Students
NSU Student Involvement and Leadership has started offering virtual events. During the month of April, SIL plans to host live Zoom videoconference events for students, such as virtual charades. Ideas for virtual events that students can hold themselves have been added to the SIL Webpage. To stay up to date on all of these offerings, follow the NSU SIL Facebook Page.
Career Services Update
Career Services staff are working remotely during this time. Staff are connecting with students using Zoom or phone for appointments, or via email for general questions. Students can either schedule an appointment by accessing their Wolf Work account, or by emailing careerservices@northern.edu or britt.lorenz@northern.edu.
Password Expiration Reminders
NSU Net Services is implementing password expiration reminders. Beginning four days prior to your password expiration date (which happens every six months), you will receive a daily email with instructions on how to change your password. You must be registered with Northern’s self-service password reset service in order to reset your password without contacting the Support Desk. If you are not registered, and your password expires after Support Desk hours, you may lose access to many services including D2L, Banner, Zoom, Microsoft O365, Library databases and campus WiFi until the next business day. If you have not registered for the self-service password reset service, please visit the Password Reset Page and select the Register or Change Info option.
