Distinguished Alum Maunu encourages grads to be the best version of themselves

It might be tempting to try to imitate the methods of others who are accomplishing great things, but Chris Maunu has this advice for new Northern State University graduates: “be you.”

Dr. Rochelle Nolte is the 2018 NSU Distinguished Alumna for the College of Arts and Sciences.

Capt. Nolte has had a highly successful career with the U.S. Public Health Service, and she attributes that success to NSU and the top-notch professors who wouldn’t settle for anything less than her full potential.

“My experiences with the Public Health Service have been beyond anything I ever could have dreamed up for myself. I never could have imagined such a great career,” she said. “I have Northern to thank for that.”

When Carolyn Thompson faced a cancer diagnosis and was given eight weeks to live, she believed in one powerful truth.

“I believed I was going to survive and that God would have a great and mighty purpose,” said Thompson, a 1991 graduate of Northern State University.

That was 2015. Today, Thompson is in remission, has published a book, and is running a successful business.

A creative force of mass proportions, the Northern State University Art Department has left its mark, or brushstroke, nearly everywhere you look on campus, in the community and even on a global scale. From the brilliant exhibitions displayed throughout the Northern Galleries to the masses of yarn that can be found around campus when the Art Club “yarnifies” NSU, there is certainly no shortage of creativity flowing into and out of the NSU Art Department.

NSU men’s basketball team makes historic national championship appearance in home state

For Northern State University, 2018 will be remembered as the year the men’s basketball team united the state of South Dakota with an electrifying national championship appearance at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

The Wolves made history with a record-breaking season that drew an unprecedented level of hometown support – and “hometown” extended far beyond the borders of the NSU campus.
