 The Northern State University Art Department presents the 2017 Juried Student Exhibition from March 1-March 31 in the NSU Student Center gallery. The opening reception is 6-7:30 p.m. March 2 in the Student Center Gallery. The event is free and open to public. Refreshments will be served. The artwork presented has been chosen by this year’s juror, Lauren Tucci. Tucci is a ceramic artist and gallery assistant at the Gilded Pear gallery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Ceramics from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

In honor of Black History Month, a screening and discussion of Ava DuVernay’s documentary “13th” will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Red Room (JC117). The film explores the history of racial inequality in the United States. The event, co-sponsored by NSU Jump Start and the NSU Honors Program, is free and open to the public.


Dr. Kenneth Boulton and JoAnne Barry will present “Music for Piano Four-Hands” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in NSU’s Krikac Auditorium.

For more than 27 years, Boulton and Barry have presented piano duet and duo concerts throughout the United States and Europe. Enthusiastic advocates of piano ensemble playing, the husband and wife team are in demand for their lecture-demonstrations of four-hand technique and repertoire, particularly works appropriate for student use.

Northern State University will host a grand opening of the Confucius Institute’s Chinese Cultural Center on Thursday, Feb. 23, featuring a demonstration by a renowned Chinese paper-cutting artist.

The grand opening begins at 6 p.m. in NSU’s Williams Library. Speakers will include Dr. Greg DePies, interim director of the NSU Confucius Institute; Dr. Timothy Downs, NSU president; and Dr. Alan LaFave, NSU provost and vice president for academic affairs. Tao Wang’s paper-cutting presentation will take place at 7 p.m.

Northern State University’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble (VJE) will offer an evening of sweet jazz, featuring coffee and desserts on Thursday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the NSU Student Center Centennial Room. For more information about this event, please click here.

Northern State University will honor the 332nd birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach with the seventh annual Bach’s Lunch on Wednesday, March 22. The concert will begin at noon at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave. S.E. Bach’s Lunch will feature the NSU Chamber Singers, under the direction of NSU Director of Choral Activities Dr. Timothy Woods. Several NSU music faculty and friends will also perform, including Dr. Kenneth Boulton, dean of the School of Fine Arts and piano; Dr. Darci Bultema, soprano; Dr. Audrey Miller, clarinet; Dr.

Join Dr. Robert Vodnoy and the Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony on February 25. The prgram selections, sure to warm your musical soul on a cold winter's evening, are highlighted by Schumann's Symphony No. 4 in D Minor and winners of the 2016 NSU Concerto/Aria Competition. Dr. Jean Marie Hellner, a scholar on the music and life of Robert Schumann, will give a pre-concert talk.
