Northern offers a variety of unique opportunities for students and community members to study and learn outside the U.S., led by experienced faculty and including the option to enroll in credit-bearing courses.

SPRING BREAK SERVICE LEARNING IN GUATEMALA

Dates: March 6-14, 2020

Credits: none

  • Build a bottle school in San Martín Jilotepeque 
  • Take a community hike, meet the locals, visit the homes of local producers
  • Learn about Guatemalan culture, people, history and civil war
  • Visit Mayan ruins of Chwa Nim Ab’äj, the last Kaqchikel fortress conquered by the Spaniards; and enjoy an eye-opening tour led by expert guide Dimas, who practices Mayan spirituality
  • Visit the School for Children with Special Needs
  • Explore beautiful Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage City known for its preserved Spanish Baroque-influenced architecture and rich history
  • Visit the artisan markets, museums, galleries, churches and sites of historical interest

CULTURE AND LANGUAGE OF COSTA RICA

Dates: May 11-25, 2020

Credits: 2

  • Tour the National Museum, Jade Museum, Plaza de la Democracia and National Park
  • Visit San Jose Artisanal Market, full of beautiful art by local artists and many souvenir stalls
  • Learn about history and tour the National Theater of Costa Rica
  • Take a walking tour of the main historical sites in Heredia - see Fortin, Parque Central, Casa de Cultura, Mercado Central and the National University
  • Explore areas around Poás volcano and a coffee plantation - try the coffee with a traditional breakfast
  • Hike and see four different waterfalls hidden in the dense forest at La Paz Waterfall
  • Meet the local students to practice your Spanish
  • Join the dance club and learn Salsa, merengue, bachata and swing criollo
  • Visit Irazú Volcano National Park, which has an active volcano
  • Learn how to cook and enjoy Costa Rica’s traditional food

  • Tour the brewery Griesbräu zu Murnau and see the beer brewing process
  • Explore the highest mountain in Germany, Zugspitze, by cable car
  • Tour the Linderhof Palace built by King Ludwig II and visit the Ettal Abbey 
  • Visit the formal royal palace Munich Residenz and Nymphenburg Palace
  • Learn history about Nazi war criminals by visiting Memorium Nuremburg Trials and Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds
  • Take a boat on the Spree River to explore Berlin from the water in the quieter evening hours
  • Tour of the German Parliament (Bundestag) and the Reichstag Building which are the center of Germany’s political life
  • Visit the Palace of Sanssouci
  • Tour the Hohenschönhausen Memorial 
  • Visit to the documentation center Topography of Terror

HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY OF PERU

Dates: June 3-13, 2020

  • Explore one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu
  • Experience Peru’s biodiversity with a guided hike and canoe trips through the Tambopata National Reserve in Peru’s Amazon
  • Walk the Maras Salt Pans, which have been harvested since the Incan Empire
  • Tour the downtowns of Cusco and Lima with local guides
  • Take in the natural beauty and rich history of the Sacred Valley of the Incas
  • Enjoy a cultural performance with live music and traditional Peruvian dancing
  • Visit an archaeological museum with the world’s largest private collection of pre-Columbian art
  • Spend a day with a local community learning about daily life, agriculture, and arts in rural Peru
  • Explore the Amazon rainforest with a walk across a network of hanging bridges through the forest canopy

  • Tour the Wawel Royal Castle and the Wieliczka Salt Mine
  • Tour the Royal Castle and visit Łazienki Park, the largest park in Warsaw
  • Visit a grammar school in Warsaw
  • Visit the Palace of Science and Culture, St. Anne’s Church, St. Catherine’s Church and Saxon Garden
  • Explore the World War II Museum and enjoy the Sopot beach in Gdansk
