Q: How do I set up my Northern email/student account?

A: For a printable version of the account retrieval steps, visit NSU Student Password Retrieval. You will start by visiting the NSU Password Reset page.

1. If this is your first time accessing your account, click the link under “First-Time Access.” You will enter your NSU email in the User ID field and fill in the Captcha. Choose from the verification methods available to you: Text my Mobile Phone, Call my Mobile Phone, or Email my Alternate Email.

 

2. Enter the full phone number or email address in the line and then click "Next."

*If the last two digits of the phone number displayed don’t match your phone number, first check to see if it is one of your parents' phone numbers. You can enter that to get the code and change your phone number within your account later. If it doesn’t match any numbers, please contact the NSU Help Desk at 605-626-2283 for assistance.

 

3. On the next page, you will enter the verification code you received. You will then be able to create your new password. Your password must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be 8 characters in length

  • Must contain at least three of the following four character sets: lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers, special characters (e.g. !@#$%^&*)

  • May not contain any part of your username

4. Your account will now be able to get you access to Desire2Learn (D2L), your NSU email (Gmail), and Self-Service Banner

 

Q: How do I access my courses?

A: Your online courses can be accessed through Desire2Learn (D2L). The direct link can be found at the bottom of the Northern homepage or at D2L. You will log in with your university email address. All courses taken will be accessible through D2L, even if they are through other South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR) institutions.

 

Q: Why isn’t my course listed on D2L?

A: While instructors have the ability to activate courses in D2L up to 30 days prior to the term start date, many choose to wait until the first day of class. If, after the term begins, you do not see your courses listed in D2L, please contact Admissions at 605-626-7603 or matthew.perreault@northern.edu. You may also verify your class schedule in Self-Service Banner. Log in to Self-Service Banner, then click "View Registration Information." Next, either look up a schedule for your desired term or select the Active Registrations tab to show your registered schedule for the term.

 

Q: What books and class materials will I need for my course?

A: You can order books and other course materials online using the Student Information link under “Course Materials” at Wolfe Shoppe. Details are available at NSU Online Bookstore FAQs. If you need assistance, please contact the instructor directly for more information. Your course may use First Day Access (FDA), which provides access to the text digitally instantly through D2L. If your course uses FDA, your textbook cost will be added to your tuition and billed directly through the Finance Office. You will receive an email with access information prior to the start of class with instructions on the program and how to opt out. If you do not wish to participate in FDA and will purchase the materials on your own, you may opt out using the instructions provided in the email. This information may also be provided in the instructor’s syllabus. For answers to more questions about FDA, please check out the FAQ provided by the bookstore. Note that the sign-in/account for the NSU Bookstore website is not the same as your NSU email account.

 

Q: How do I pay for my dual credit courses?

A: Billing statements for the term will not be posted until about 30 days prior to the start of the term. Paper billing statements will not be mailed to students. All students should access their bill via their Banner account. To get to Banner, click on “myNSU” on the top of the Northern homepage. Click on “Student Information” under Self-Service Banner. After logging in with your university email credentials, you will see a heading for My Student Account Information with a link to SDepay/View Account/Pay Here . There is a 2.75 percent surcharge for using credit or debit cards. If using a routing number and account number for a checking account (eCheck), there is no fee assessed.

 

Students may also pay with cash or check at the Finance Office or mail checks to the Finance Office. Be sure to include the student’s name and ID number with any cash or check payment. The mailing address is:
