ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dr. Andria Moon, NSU assistant professor of elementary education, Dr. Cheryl Wold, NSU assistant professor of special education, and Dr. Greg Francom, NSU assistant professor of E-learning, have recently published an article in the latest issue of “Tech Trends.”
The published article is titled “Enhancing Reading Comprehension with Student-Centered iPad Applications.”
Moon, Wold and Francom collected data gathered from NSU School of Education student-teaching candidates’ experiences of using iPad applications in fifth-grade classrooms and their impact on student improvements in reading comprehension and used it to write their article.
According to a summary of the article supplied by Moon, “University teacher candidates guided fifth-grade students in completing the iPad reading comprehension activities. Findings indicate that the fifth-grade students increased in their reading achievement scores to a statistically significant degree during the period of this study. These students also reported more enjoyment and understanding of reading. The university teacher candidates who participated also expressed that they gained valuable experience as they worked on a technology-enhanced learning experience with actual students. This study suggests that student-centered reading comprehension activities on the iPad can lead to better student achievement in reading comprehension.”
Moon joined NSU's faculty in August 2013. She received a Ed.D. in educational leadership from Central Michigan University, M.S.Ed. degree in educational technology in from Central Michigan University and a B.S.Ed. degree in elementary education and early childhood from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Wold joined NSU's faculty in 2013. She received a Ph.D. in teaching and learning from the University of North Dakota, an M.S.Ed. degree in special education/learning disabilities from Northern Illinois University and a B.S.Ed. degree in elementary and special education from NSU.
Francom joined NSU in 2011. He received a Ph.D. in Learning, Design, and Technology at the University of Georgia, a bachelor’s degree in media arts studies from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree in instructional technology from Utah State University.
