  • Northern State University Announces Retirement of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

    ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University announced the retirement of Dr. Michael Wanous, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Wanous joined Northern in July 2019 and has provided more than six years of service to the university, with oversight of academic programs, faculty development, and institutional accreditation. Wanous' retirement will be effective in December 2025.

  • Startup Weekend Bootcamp to Be Held Nov. 1–2 at NSU

    ABERDEEN, S.D. –  The Northern Innovation and Startup Center will host a CO.STARTERS Bootcamp on Nov. 1–2 at the NSU Library.

    This hands-on, two-day workshop is designed for busy founders who want a fast-paced opportunity to work on their business.   • Northern State University Announces Retirement of Vice President of Finance and Administration

    ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Interim President Dr. Laurie Nichols today announced the retirement of Veronica Paulson, Vice President for Finance and Administration. Paulson joined Northern in 1990 and has provided more than 35 years of dedicated service to the university, with strategic oversight of financial operations, facilities management, budgeting, and major capital projects. Paulson's retirement will be effective in June 2026.

  • NSU Jazz Concert set for Oct. 23

    ABERDEEN, S.D. — On Thursday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m., the Northern State University Music Department will present a jazz concert featuring Northern’s 2 p.m. Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Grant Manhart. The concert will take place in the Jewett Theater at the Johnson Fine Arts Center.

    There will be an engaging mix of classic and contemporary jazz charts by James Curnow, Stan Kenton, Herbie Hancock, and others.

  • Northern State University Criminology Students Tour South Dakota State Penitentiary

    ABERDEEN, S.D. – Students in Northern State University’s Prisons and Penology course recently participated in an educational tour of the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.

    The trip was organized by Dr. Lucas Z. Wiscons, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice in the College of Arts and Sciences, with support from Dr. Elizabeth Haller, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of English.     ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Adjunct Professor Steven Trigili has published an article in the Journal of Financial Compliance (Volume 8, Number 4).

    ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University student Noah Behrends was honored by the South Dakota Association of College Career Centers (SDACCC) during the organization’s Experiential Education Showcase Event, receiving a $500 scholarship for his outstanding experiential learning achievements.

  • NSU History Students Receive Awards from Brown County Historical Society

    ABERDEEN, S.D. – Two Northern State University history students were recognized last spring by the Brown County Historical Society for their outstanding research papers submitted to the organization’s annual Historical Research and Writing contest.

    Bridget Fuhrmann earned first place for her paper titled “German-Russians in South Dakota.” Avery Kautz received second place for her paper, “Divisive Unity: The 1964 New York World’s Fair.”

  • New South Dakota Film Project Launches to Fill Void Left by Canceled State Festival

    ABERDEEN, S.D. — In response to the cancellation of the 2025 South Dakota Film, Northern State University faculty, staff and community members have organized the inaugural South Dakota Film Project, a new initiative designed to maintain regional filmmaker networking and provide experiential learning opportunities for students.
