ABERDEEN, S.D. — Northern State University will begin its ninth cohort at the Huron Community Campus in Huron, South Dakota, offering a Master of Science in Teaching and Learning beginning in August 2026.

Designed for working educators, the program focuses on strengthening practice, supporting professional growth, and preparing teachers for expanded leadership opportunities while they continue working in their classrooms.

The cohort model allows participants to progress through the program together, creating a collaborative learning environment that encourages discussion, shared experiences, and practical classroom application. The 33-credit program aligns with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and emphasizes competency in content knowledge, diverse instructional approaches, use of data and assessments, professional development, and leadership.

The Huron cohort is sponsored through a partnership with the Huron Community Foundation, helping expand access to graduate-level professional learning for educators in the region.

Christian D. Pirlet, assistant professor of educational technology and coordinator for the program, said the program is designed for current teachers who want to elevate their classroom practices and strengthen their commitment to high-impact pedagogy and learning.

“The Teaching and Learning Huron Cohort offers participants rich learning experiences while fostering a strong sense of community,” Pirlet said. “Through the generous support of the Huron Community Foundation and the City of Huron, this cohort is offered at a much lower tuition rate than other graduate programs. In an age when more and more graduate degrees are being offered online, the cohort is an excellent opportunity to strengthen pedagogical expertise and build lasting relationships with other participants.”

Participants will meet in Huron one weekend each month, with one class held on Saturday and one on Sunday. The plan of study is designed for students to complete six credits each fall, spring, and summer term for two years, with the exception of the final summer term, which includes one three-credit course. Summer sessions meet for two consecutive weeks, with one course offered each week.

Space is limited, and the cohort is filling quickly. Prospective students can apply online at northern.edu/graduate or contact the Graduate Studies Office at gradstudies@northern.edu or 605-626-2558.
