ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University will celebrate Constitution Day on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Constitution Day is the federal observance of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. Across the Northern campus, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear patriotic clothing or decorate their workspaces with a patriotic theme.

All day, people can enjoy the hundreds of flags flown around town, courtesy of the Exchange Club. On campus, there will be a display in the NSU Beulah Williams Library, flags and decorated offices – and even Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty walking around.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the NSU Student Center, the League of Women Voters will register people to vote and the Dacotah Prairie Museum will have a display.

Over lunch, the Wolves Den will offer patriotically themed food. Then at 4 p.m., the American Legion and Exchange Club will retire American flags in the Barnett Center parking lot.

Constitution-themed Wednesday Forum

The festivities will extend into Wednesday, Sept. 18, with the NSU Noon Forum. NSU Professor of Political Science Dr. Jon Schaff will deliver ““Lincoln and the Limits of Presidential Power” at noon in the Library Round Room. Schaff is the author of “Abraham Lincoln’s Statesmanship and the Limits of Liberal Democracy,” published by Southern Illinois University Press.

All of the campus events are free and open to the public. Visit NSU’s Constitution Day Web page to find information such as Constitution Fun Facts and an interactive quiz.
